For Wisconsin residents, Upper Ice Age Campground stands out as an exceptionally suitable destination, particularly for those who cherish the authentic and serene experience of tent camping. Its unique features and strategic location within the state make it an ideal choice for both spontaneous weekend getaways and more extended nature retreats.
First and foremost, the campground's dedication to providing a true tent camping experience is a major draw. Unlike larger, more developed campgrounds that cater primarily to RVs, Upper Ice Age offers genuinely "wooded sites" with "plenty of tree cover," ensuring a peaceful, private, and natural setting. This focus allows locals to fully immerse themselves in Wisconsin’s stunning natural environment, escaping the hustle and bustle of daily life. The quiet atmosphere is consistently highlighted by visitors, making it perfect for those seeking tranquility and a chance to truly unwind under the stars.
Secondly, its location directly on the Ice Age National Scenic Trail is an enormous asset for active Wisconsinites. Having immediate access to this renowned trail means endless opportunities for hiking, nature walks, and exploring the unique geological history of the state, right from your campsite. This makes it an ideal basecamp for adventurers who want to combine camping with significant outdoor exploration.
Furthermore, the practical amenities, such as potable water access and reasonably sized, relatively flat sites capable of accommodating large tents, ensure a comfortable yet still rustic experience. While the bathrooms are vault facilities, this aligns with the more primitive, natural camping style favored by many tent campers. The presence of a camp store is also a convenient touch, meaning you don't have to venture far for essentials or a souvenir.
In essence, Upper Ice Age Campground provides Wisconsin locals with an accessible, authentic, and peaceful escape into the heart of their state's natural beauty. It's a place where you can reconnect with nature, enjoy the simple pleasures of camping, and make lasting memories without having to travel far from home, solidifying its status as a top choice for a genuine outdoor adventure.

Great campground! The wooded sites in Upper Ice Age were great, we were in site 401 which was right next to the shower facilities and a water spigot. We had one 9x11 tent, and could easily have fit one more large tent on the other side of the site. The camp store had some great souvenir items as well as camp necessities. Great campground all-around!
Jun 04, 2023 · Allison SchoenbacherThis is the campground you want to stay at if you’re tent camping. It’s quiet and plenty of tree cover. Our site was decently flat, but we wish it wasn’t straight dirt and mud. Vault bathrooms, potable water and plenty of space for big tents and a vehicle
Jun 02, 2024 · Noah RaisanenTalk about relaxation… so much privacy in this campground and the tree coverage puts this campground to BED. I really enjoyed my time at this site.
Jul 06, 2024 · Emily SzakGreat tent car camping. Plenty of space on the site and a reasonable space between. Although there will be a ton of people on the weekends. But during the week not bad. There has been 2-3 sites between us and others most of this week.
Jun 07, 2023 · Brent HenneyCamping at Devils lake was nice. My campsite was somewhat private with the next campsite being about 40-50 feet away.
