For many Pennsylvania families, the heart of an authentic outdoor experience lies along the state’s majestic waterways. Buckaloons Campground, nestled within the vast expanse of the Allegheny National Forest (ANF) near Irvine, PA, provides an exceptional basecamp for accessing the natural splendor of the Allegheny Wild and Scenic River. Unlike some of the more primitive sites in the forest, Buckaloons offers a perfect balance of deep woods atmosphere and essential modern conveniences, making it highly suitable for both seasoned RV travelers and families seeking a comfortable tent camping experience.
Situated at the confluence of the Allegheny River, Brokenstraw Creek, and Irvine Run, the campground is a historically significant location—once the site of an ancient Native American trading post. Today, it is a haven for water sports enthusiasts, fishermen, and hikers. The property management group ensures the sites are generally spacious, well-shaded, and equipped with necessary amenities like picnic tables and fire rings. While guests should be prepared for the typical experience of a large national forest campground, including necessary short drives to distant amenities like showers, the overall experience at Buckaloons is consistently rated as highly positive, offering a friendly, tranquil, and beautiful escape into Western Pennsylvania's premier natural landscape.
Buckaloons Campground’s location is a significant draw, offering direct access to key regional features while maintaining excellent road accessibility for Pennsylvania travelers.

The campground is strategically positioned in Warren County, located approximately six miles southwest of the city of Warren. It sits right at the junction of U.S. Routes 6 and 62, making it an easy drive from most points in Northwestern Pennsylvania. Despite its proximity to major routes, the large, well-wooded sites maintain a sense of privacy and seclusion. The core highlight of the location is its setting: it is positioned where Brokenstraw Creek and Irvine Run meet the Allegheny River, providing a central hub for all river-based recreation. It also serves as the beginning of the second designated segment of the Allegheny Wild and Scenic River, offering excellent launch points for exploring the Allegheny Islands Wilderness downstream. While local convenience stores and gas stations require a 15-20 minute drive into nearby towns like Warren or Youngsville, the ease of finding the campground and its direct river access are major benefits.
Buckaloons Campground offers a comprehensive list of services, providing a high level of comfort for a National Forest setting, including essential hookups for RVs and trailers.

Stayed 4 nights at Buckaloons Campground over the July 4th weekend - all in all - Gave 4 out of 5 stars. The site we booked was pretty spacious, very well shaded, pretty level for parking and had enough room to hang out in front of the fire or camper. It was nice to have a small ice chest at the entrance you could purchase. Looks like it’s based on the honor system, as you put $2 per bag in an envelope and deposit it into a tube in the ground. The bathrooms and showers are in the middle of the campground so you will most likely have to drive to shower, if you don’t use your own facilities. The name plates on the sites could be a little larger and clearer - but if you know your site # you should be ok. It would have been nice to have a utility sink at the bath houses to wash or clean dishes at or just to rinse out bathing suits after being on the river. There is also no really close gas station, market, etc. just be prepared to drive 15-20 min each way to get fuel or maybe a food item you forgot to pack. An overall good stay , maybe we will even check out a different site next time since they all looked decent in size and similar in style.
