Introduction / Overview
For Vermonters and those who cherish the state's natural beauty, the Northeast Kingdom is a true gem, and at its heart lies the stunning Lake Willoughby. Nestled directly across from the south end of this magnificent glacial lake is White Caps Campground. This family-run destination has earned a reputation, even being named one of New England’s most beautiful lakes by Yankee magazine, and the campground itself has been highlighted as one of the top campgrounds in the region. White Caps Campground offers a quintessential Vermont outdoor experience, providing a range of accommodations, essential amenities, and direct access to a wealth of recreational opportunities centered around the crystal-clear waters and surrounding mountains. It serves as a fantastic basecamp for those looking to explore the natural splendor of the Willoughby State Forest and the wider Kingdom Trails network.
However, as a local user planning a trip, it's helpful to be aware of the variety in the camping experience. While the hosts are known for being accommodating, and the lake views are unparalleled, the campground operates on a smaller, cozier footprint. Visitors should expect sites to be relatively close together. For tent campers, be advised that some utility sites are located up a steep incline and may present challenges with sloping terrain, tree roots, and proximity to the main road (VT-5A), which can introduce some noise. It is advisable to call ahead and discuss your specific site needs, especially for tent or larger RV setups, to ensure the best possible fit for your family or group.
Location and Accessibility
White Caps Campground boasts a spectacular and easily accessible location right on Vermont Route 5A (VT-5A) in the Orleans/Westmore area of the state. Its address is 5659 VT-5A, Orleans, VT 05860, USA. Crucially, the campground is situated directly across the road from the south end of Lake Willoughby, providing immediate, convenient access to the beach, swimming, and water activities.
This part of the Northeast Kingdom is a recreational hub. The campground is minutes away from the famous Kingdom Trails, offering world-class mountain biking for riders of all skill levels. It is also the gateway to hiking on Mount Pisgah and Mount Hor, which frame the lake and offer breathtaking overlooks. For local explorers, the proximity to the Canadian border means that a day trip into Canada is even a viable option (a passport is required, of course!). While the campground is on a main route, making it easy to reach by car, those looking for off-road cycling should be mindful of the traffic on VT-5A and may need to drive a short distance to access more dedicated, flatter bike trails like those near Newport. The accessibility for various outdoor pursuits—from hiking to paddling to biking—is one of its strongest appeals for Vermont residents looking for a true 'staycation' destination.

For locals in Vermont, White Caps Campground offers a uniquely accessible and amenity-rich way to experience one of the state’s true natural wonders, Lake Willoughby. It is a family-run business where the hosts genuinely care, offering a warm, community-focused feel often desired by local patrons. It’s an ideal spot for a quick weekend getaway where you can maximize your outdoor time without the stress of extensive travel. The convenience of the general store, the clean facilities, and the sheer natural beauty of the location make it an excellent choice for a 'staycation' adventure, providing Vermonters with an easy escape to the mountains and water activities the Northeast Kingdom is known for. The good: clean restrooms and showers. Across from the lake. The bad: very small sites on top of one another. The UT sites are up a very steep incline. My site, UT5, was sloped with tree roots and rocks all over. No level spot for a tent. Very very close to the road, so noisy. I go camping for peace and quiet. Got the worst 3 nights sleep of my life and left, 2 days early. No peace nor quiet was to be found here.
Sep 03, 2025 · Ericca BurdickRented a cabin here last week . The hosts were very accommodating and helpful locating e-bike trails for us. The store had everything you could possibly need and home cooked food was delicious ! Cabin was clean and even though next to bathrooms and porta potties there was no unpleasant smells!! Found the bathrooms to be clean . There is a Water station for washing dishes . Sights are very small and close together and tent sights are up a very steep hill but our cabin rental was a perfect place to rest your head . The lake across the street had the most amazing views. We kayaked and swam and the water was so clear . You could walk quite aways on a nice sandy bottom . We drove to Newport to e-bike and trail was pretty flat and easy with pretty views and a stop beside lake to take a dip . Wasn’t comfortable trying to ride on busy road by campground. No place to ride in campground but there were a few kids with regular bikes . Other than the sights being very close together I would still return for another visit !! Can’t say enough about our hosts … they were great ! Also took a day trip to Canada because we were so close ! Bring a passport !!! Final note … you can also set up tents on a few spots across from cabins . Also used for campers .
Aug 16, 2025 · Sandra ConwayThe only convincing feature of this campsite is its magnificent location between the mountains and the beautiful lake. However, it can only be reached from the campground via the busy road 5! The site is terrible. You pay 2$ for a 5 minute shower. There are only 3 toilets/showers for everyone!!! Plus 2 porta-potties. Everything is unkempt, full of weeds, getting on in years. Rotten wood already at the entrance, risk of injury everywhere due to broken boards etc. The pitches are unpleasantly cramped, they planned for masses, the operators are cashing in on the beautiful location, if they had 5 pitches less everyone would have a minimum of space. No cell phone reception and the wifi is only sometimes available and only directly at the entrance. Never again!!!!
Jul 20, 2025 · Marie SpraThis place is amazing! We stayed in a cabin which was very clean and comfortable! The bathrooms were also clean and regularly maintained. It looks like they may have done some renovations recently. Also, the country store has some very tasty food and good drink selections! The view is absolutely fabulous! We were about a 1 or 2 minute walk from the lake itself, which has several established swimming sections. We had our own paddleboards but noticed they have a great collection of paddleboards and kayaks to rent. They also have e-bike rentals! Unfortunately we weren't able to take advantage of them, but plan to next time we come! The grounds are located right next to some primo hiking trails. The owners/management are as nice as can be. I had some reservation issues (my own fault) and they were extremely accommodating. We definitely plan on coming back!
Jun 29, 2025 · Nikki EkenstiernaThis campground has so much to offer! Jaw-dropping views, a variety of site types, very friendly owners, and a wonderful store with anything you may need as well as kayak and paddle board rentals. I rented a kayak which one of the owners conveniently hauled to and from the beach for me. The campground is situated directly across the (not too busy) street from the beach which has almost white sand, crystal clear water, and hiking trails. It is also only a 2-minute drive away from the Mount Pisgah Trailhead, making for many accessible summer activities right in the immediate area. The restrooms are centrally located and very private thanks to the individually separated rooms and key system. One downside I noticed is that the upper tent sites are small and very gravelly which can make it difficult to get stakes into the ground. Some of them are also on a steep hill which may not be accessible for big vehicles, however there is an extra parking lot available further down as needed. This didn't affect my stay personally, as I was at site UT1 which is near the bottom and could easily fit the sedan that I brought.
