Introduction / Overview
For Vermonters seeking an authentic, peaceful, and wonderfully secluded outdoor experience in the state’s majestic Northeast Kingdom, look no further than **Clyde River Camping** in West Charleston. This is not a bustling resort campground; rather, it is described by local visitors as a "truly a hidden jewel" offering a more intimate connection with the natural beauty of the region. Located just a short drive from some of the Northeast Kingdom’s most iconic destinations—including the stunning Lake Willoughby, Mount Pisgah, and the world-renowned Kingdom Trails mountain biking network—Clyde River Camping provides a ruggedly charming basecamp.
The defining feature of this location is its exclusive positioning right along the banks of the Clyde River. It is a smaller, more personalized operation, typically featuring only a handful of camping sites, often described as being "far from each other." This low density ensures a significant amount of space and privacy for campers, a rarity in high-demand camping areas. The commitment to a back-to-basics experience is clear: sites are spacious, offer direct river access for swimming and water activities, and the hosts are celebrated for being "super friendly" and accommodating. It offers a relaxed, country atmosphere that is highly appealing to those looking to truly unplug and embrace the quietude of rural Vermont. While its proximity to water ensures beautiful views and recreational opportunities, a small note of caution is always in order: being right next to the river means campers must come prepared for the local wildlife, particularly with ample bug repellant and appropriate clothing, as mosquitoes can be prevalent, especially near the river's edge. This is a small but necessary trade-off for such a pristine, riverside location.
Location and Accessibility
Clyde River Camping is nestled deep in the heart of the Northeast Kingdom, making it an ideal destination for residents from all corners of Vermont, particularly those from the central and northern areas. The address is:
466 Center School Rd, West Charleston, VT 05872, USA
Its location on Center School Road places it slightly off the main thoroughfares, contributing to its secluded feel. Despite its quiet setting, its strategic placement offers superb accessibility to major outdoor recreation hubs. It is only minutes of driving away from the beautiful Lake Willoughby and Mount Pisgah, offering world-class hiking and swimming opportunities. Furthermore, it serves as a fantastic, peaceful alternative lodging option for visitors looking to explore the Kingdom Trails near Burke, which are known globally for their mountain biking circuits. For local users, finding this spot provides a gateway to exploring the stunning natural landscapes and vibrant outdoor communities of the Northeast Kingdom, with the added benefit of a relatively quick and direct drive. Campers should note that Site #1, being the closest to the road, may experience some ambient noise, suggesting that deeper sites may offer more profound peace and quiet. Detailed directions—like passing the elementary school and taking the first right after crossing the bridge over the Clyde River—ensure that even though it feels hidden, it is easy for local drivers to locate.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
Clyde River Camping is perfectly tailored for the Vermont resident who appreciates a quiet, back-country feel without venturing into deep wilderness camping. Its suitability for locals is rooted in its unique offering: a "hidden jewel" that provides genuine seclusion and privacy—a scarce commodity in the state’s most beautiful spots—while still being incredibly close to world-class attractions. Vermonters know that the Northeast Kingdom holds some of the state's best-kept secrets, and this campground allows you to tap into that local knowledge.
The small number of sites and the generous spacing mean you are guaranteed a peaceful retreat, ideal for unwinding after a day of strenuous mountain biking on the Kingdom Trails or a beautiful hike up Mount Pisgah. The simple, yet highly valued, amenities—particularly the free firewood, clean outhouse, and direct river access—make it a low-maintenance, high-reward destination. While you will need to remember your bug repellant and long clothes, as any experienced local river camper knows, that is a small price to pay for a spacious, dog-friendly site right by the water. Clyde River Camping is an excellent resource for Vermont families, couples, and solo adventurers looking for an authentic, friendly, and private escape to the Northeast Kingdom, making it a reliable and cherished part of the local outdoor scene.

We loved the place! We had a lot of space, firewood, a table and an access to the river. Our dogs had a lot of fun too! This is truly a hidden jewel just a few minutes of driving from Mount Pisgah and Willowby Lake. We are from Québec and it is about 30 min after the border. We'll be back for sure! However, since the tenting spot is right next to the river, you have to beware of mosquitoes. We were not as prepared as we should have been. You REALLY need long clothes ang bug repellant!
Jul 29, 2024 · Antoine CôtéBeautiful quiet spot for camping near Willoughby and not far from Kingdom Trails, Burke. Only 4-5 camping sites far from each other, all by the Clyde river. We were at site #1 which is the closest to the road and was a bit noisy because of that but still we really enjoyed our stay. The hosts are super friendly, you can swim in the river directly from your site, the outhouse is super clean, there’s free wood for camp fires… we will be back for sure!!
Jul 21, 2023 · Orélie CloutierThe owner gracefully allowed to stay on super short notice as we were failing to find a primitive camping spot. We got there at night but we woke up to the cuteste spot ever, right by the river. 100% would recommend ☀️ Thanks again !
