Kamp Across From the Dunes About
For folks right here in Michigan, especially those traveling through or looking for a comfortable, welcoming spot in Southwest Michigan, Kamp Across From the Dunes in Sawyer offers a unique and highly praised experience. This "little park," as one reviewer affectionately called it, stands out for its exceptional cleanliness, cozy atmosphere, and, most notably, the unparalleled helpfulness of its owner, Doug, and the entire management team. If you’re seeking a well-maintained campground with a personal touch, this hidden gem is certainly worth considering for your next Michigan adventure.
Kamp Across From the Dunes is a charming, privately owned campground located at 12011 Red Arrow Hwy, Sawyer, MI 49125, USA. While its name clearly hints at its proximity to the majestic Warren Dunes State Park, the campground offers its own distinct appeal. Visitors consistently highlight the immaculate condition of the park, with one reviewer stating, "For a small park, this was one of the cleanest and nicest I have seen in a long time." This dedication to cleanliness, combined with a "wonderfully wooded and cozy" property layout centered around a small pond, creates a tranquil and inviting environment.
What truly sets Kamp Across From the Dunes apart, however, is the remarkable hospitality of its owners and staff. Numerous reviews praise the owner, Doug, for being "very very helpful" – from assisting with tight parking spots to even helping with unexpected repairs, like fixing a broken mudflap on a motorhome. This level of personal assistance and genuine care fosters a sense of community and makes every guest feel truly welcome. While a significant portion of the park appears to be occupied by full-time or seasonal residents ("90% of the park is occupied by full-time fifth wheel or pull behind trailer occupants"), transient campers still find a warm reception and a comfortable stay, making it an excellent choice for an "overnight stopping" point or a quiet base to explore the local area.
Kamp Across From the Dunes is ideally situated at 12011 Red Arrow Hwy, Sawyer, MI 49125, USA. This location is a major advantage for Michigan locals, placing it in the heart of Southwest Michigan’s popular "Harbor Country" region. Sawyer is a small, charming community known for its proximity to Lake Michigan, its unique shops, and, of course, the towering sand dunes of Warren Dunes State Park. The campground's name itself signifies its convenient location "across from the dunes," providing easy access to one of Michigan's most iconic natural attractions.
The Red Arrow Highway is a scenic route that parallels the Lake Michigan shoreline, making the campground easily accessible by car or RV. For those traveling from major Michigan cities like Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, or even the Metro Detroit area, the drive is straightforward. Visitors coming from Chicago or northern Indiana will also find the location convenient.
However, it is important for RV campers to be aware of the site layout. Reviewers have noted that "the sites are really tight" and that the owner, Doug, was "very very helpful in getting us into our tight spot." This suggests that while all sizes of RVs are accommodated, maneuvering larger rigs might require assistance, which the staff is clearly willing to provide. Despite the snug sites, the overall accessibility to local attractions, combined with the helpfulness of the park management, ensures a relatively smooth experience for most visitors. Its location also makes it an excellent "overnight stopping" point for those traveling further north into Michigan.
- RV Sites: Kamp Across From the Dunes primarily caters to RVs, offering sites suitable for motorhomes and pull-behind trailers. While some sites may be tight, the owner is known for providing excellent assistance with parking.

- Personalized Assistance: A standout service is the exceptional help provided by the owner, Doug, who goes above and beyond to assist campers with parking and even minor repairs.

- Small Pond: The park is "nicely laid out around a small pond in the middle," adding a peaceful aesthetic and potentially opportunities for catch-and-release fishing or simply enjoying the view.
- No Cable TV, Pool, or Hot Tub: For prospective campers, it's important to note what is NOT offered: there is no cable TV, no swimming pool, and no hot tub on-site.

- Long-Term Community: The presence of many full-time occupants suggests a stable, friendly community, potentially offering a sense of security and familiarity.
Given that Kamp Across From the Dunes appears to be a smaller, privately owned park with a significant number of long-term residents, traditional "promotions" like widespread discounts or seasonal package deals might not be publicly advertised in the same way as larger state parks or resort-style campgrounds.
However, based on the customer reviews, the primary "value-add" and inherent "offer" at Kamp Across From the Dunes comes from its exceptional service and well-maintained facilities:
- Personalized Assistance: The owner, Doug, and the staff are noted for providing extraordinary help, from guiding campers into tight spots to assisting with minor repairs. This level of personalized service is a significant benefit often not found at larger parks.
- Cleanliness: The consistent feedback on the park's cleanliness means you are getting a well-cared-for environment, which contributes directly to a pleasant stay.
- Reliable Wi-Fi: While not a discount, included and well-functioning Wi-Fi is a valuable amenity that saves campers from using their own data or seeking hotspots.
- Long-Term Stay Potential: For those looking for extended stays in the area, the prevalence of full-time residents suggests that the park is set up to accommodate longer-term bookings, potentially at competitive rates (though specific pricing structures are not provided in the reviews).
To inquire about current rates, availability, specific site details, or any potential unadvertised offers for longer stays, it is highly recommended to contact Kamp Across From the Dunes directly. Being a smaller operation, direct communication is likely the best way to get the most accurate and personalized information.

Customer Reviews
A fellow named Doug is the owner of this little park. He was very very helpful in getting us into our tight spot. He also helped me repair a broken mudflap on my motorhome. It appears that 90% of the park is occupied by full-time fifth wheel or pull behind trailer occupants. I did see four or five other motorhomes in the park, but they also appear to be full-time. For a small park, this was one of the cleanest and nicest I have seen in a long time. The Wi-Fi worked well, but no cable TV. There is no pool or hot tub, but the park is nicely laid out around a small pond in the middle. Great place for overnight stopping. We were here in mid September 2021. I would definitely stop here again on my way to upper Michigan.
The owners are so helpful and offer to help with anything a camper could need. The property is wonderfully wooded and cozy.
Wonderful, quiet campground. You can't beat the location. The bathroom facilities are excellent. The owners are friendly and very helpful. We spent 7 days here and have no complaints. Everything was great. This not the place to go if you are looking for the "campground" experience (scheduled activities and such). It is an excellent home base to explore the area and enjoy the beach while having full hook-up and water.
We rented the ranch cabin for a couple of nights and it was clean and comfortable! Our boys loved the bunk beds! Owners were so welcoming and helpful. You have to bring your own bedding, but sleeping bags worked for our boys on the bunk beds. Must Dos: Get ice cream from the Beach Bucket next door and bring bug spray for the campfire at night.
I was upset because I had been searching around and called this location and was looking for tent camping for a fun weekend with my wife. The staff either was impatient or having a bad day and sounded kindof hasty explaining that there was no tent camping available anymore at the campground. To be fair, I hadn’t ever stayed there before, but was also surprised that they didn’t offer it. I guess some locations only do RV camping. But being new to camping, I have been learning where accepts tents and where doesn’t. I had initially written a poor review in my frustration, but the owner corrected me, saying that because I hadn’t stayed at the location and that they haven’t offered tent camping in many years, it wasn’t fair to review poorly. I do understand that reviews impact business, and I pride myself to offer fair reviews. I do think that the response to my review was also hasty to judge my point of view and was frustrated. I deleted my previous review and will say that this place is probably a great place for RV’s and I won’t judge how beautiful it probably is there. My brief interaction with what I had with them just left me sad.
