Introduction / Overview: Bloomfield Campground – A Taste of Lewis and Clark Lake Life
For Nebraska locals seeking the quintessential lake camping experience, Bloomfield Campground, nestled within the expansive Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area (SRA) near Crofton, is an exceptional destination. This specific unit of the SRA offers a balanced, smaller-scale environment that appeals to both seasoned RV enthusiasts and those who prefer a more traditional tent camping setup.
Bloomfield Campground is a haven for water-lovers, situated on the shores of Lewis and Clark Lake—Nebraska's second-largest reservoir—which forms part of the scenic Missouri National Recreational River. The park's atmosphere is defined by its proximity to the water, offering stunning views and easy access to aquatic activities. Customer reviews frequently highlight the park's scenic beauty, with one camper noting the perfect spot "on a hill that overlooked the lake and the dock."
While the broader Lewis and Clark SRA offers large, full-service campgrounds, Bloomfield is known for being slightly smaller and more manageable, providing a quieter experience for visitors. It successfully blends necessary modern conveniences—like clean, flushable restrooms with running water and soap—with a desirable outdoor feel. The overall impression is one of cleanliness and attentiveness, with one customer appreciating that the site was "monitored twice during my two night, day and a half stay," ensuring safety and adherence to park rules.
Location and Accessibility: On the Scenic Shores of Lewis and Clark Lake
Bloomfield Campground is geographically positioned as one of the key recreation areas on the Nebraska side of Lewis and Clark Lake. Its address, Bloomfield Recreation Area, Crofton, NE 68730, places it conveniently near the northeast border of Nebraska, a central point for residents coming from Omaha, Lincoln, or western parts of the state.
Accessibility is excellent, with the campground being part of the larger state recreation area, which is easily reached via Nebraska Highway 121 from Crofton. The location’s primary advantage for local users is the direct water access. Unlike some campgrounds that require a long trek to the water, Bloomfield provides sites that are "right next to the water," which is perfect for fishing or easily launching a kayak or small boat from the nearby ramp.
The campground’s sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning last-minute weekend warriors from Nebraska can usually find a spot, though early arrival is always recommended during peak summer months. It is important to note the remote nature of the area; as one reviewer pointed out, guests should "Bring your supplies - food, water, etc.," as local stores in Crofton or Yankton, SD (just a short drive away) might take an hour or two round trip to access, reinforcing the sense of being truly away from it all.
Services Offered (Blending Basic and Modern Comfort):
Bloomfield Campground provides a mix of essential services to cater to different styles of camping, from basic tenting to electric RV hookups.
Features / Highlights (A Focus on Lake Recreation):

Conclusion: Why This Place is Suitable for Nebraska Locals
Bloomfield Campground at Lewis and Clark SRA is perfectly suited for Nebraska locals because it offers a highly accessible, authentic, and amenity-supported lake getaway without the often overwhelming crowds of the SRA’s larger camping areas. For the Nebraska resident, this campground represents the core of a classic state recreation area experience: quality outdoor recreation supported by clean, modern facilities.
The ability to secure a desirable spot, whether a basic tent site with a view or an electric RV hookup, and enjoy immediate access to fishing, kayaking, and boating on Lewis and Clark Lake is a massive draw. The park's balance—offering flushing toilets and running water (appreciated by those "used to primitive camping"), yet feeling secluded enough to escape the hustle and bustle—is exactly what Nebraskans look for in a weekend or week-long escape. It is a well-maintained, safe, and activity-rich environment that truly showcases the beauty of the state’s northeastern recreational waters.

Came to camp and kayak for the weekend over the summer, it ended up raining most of the time. Got a little time out on the water still. The water was actually a little warmer than being above it in my kayak! This campground was the perfect spot, I don’t like huge campgrounds filled with RVs and prefer small options for tent camping. This did have RVs around me, you can’t get away from that up here really. But I had a great spot on a hill that overlooked the lake and the dock. I felt comfortable enough to leave my yak in the water (locked of course) for the next day. Wood near the site is fairly easy to find if you don’t mind hauling it in and cutting it down a bit but wouldn’t rely on it. This site was monitored twice during my two night, day and a half stay. One evening check and one morning check. Bring your supplies - food, water, etc. as you can easily spend and hour or two heading out to grab things if you didn’t bring them. But that’s not long if you really needed something!
Oct 18, 2017 · Lauren TurnerIt's perfect! Camping right next to the water. We fished the whole time! There was a bathroom super close with running water and flushing toilet. I appreciate the soap and water. Maybe I'm used to primitive camping. I had a blast!!! Love it!
