Introduction / Overview
For New Yorkers seeking the authentic camping experience without the long drive upstate, Camp Gateway - Staten Island offers a truly unique and convenient urban escape. Nestled within the Gateway National Recreation Area, this tent-only campground provides a tranquil, natural environment while remaining incredibly close to the energy and attractions of the city. It’s the perfect solution for local families, couples, and solo adventurers who want to enjoy a campfire under the stars and wake up to the sound of nature, all within the five boroughs.
Camp Gateway - Staten Island is not your typical state park campground; it is a meticulously maintained National Park Service site that leverages its prime location at Fort Wadsworth to offer spectacular views and historical context. Here, you can experience a rustic retreat with basic amenities, where the feeling of being in the "great outdoors" is juxtaposed with the stunning, ever-present view of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and the nearby New York Harbor. It serves as an ideal base for exploring both the historical sites of Fort Wadsworth and the cultural heart of Manhattan, making it an invaluable asset for local residents. The consensus from local campers is clear: it provides a peaceful, well-equipped, and conveniently located base for a memorable New York staycation.

Despite the mailing address of 210 Ave. S, Brooklyn, NY 11223, which is likely a related administrative or historical park office location, Camp Gateway - Staten Island is definitively located on Staten Island, specifically at the historic Fort Wadsworth. It uniquely bridges the gap between the rural escape and the urban excitement. You can pack your tent, drive a short distance, and immediately feel removed from the city's concrete jungle, yet you retain the option to be in the heart of Manhattan in under an hour via a free, scenic ferry ride.
This campground provides a much-needed break from the daily routine without the burden of long travel, making it perfect for weekend trips or mid-week refreshers. The well-maintained sites, clean facilities, free firewood, and incredible harbor views—especially of the Verrazzano Bridge at night—guarantee a memorable experience. It allows local New Yorkers to truly appreciate the natural and historical beauty of their own city, fostering a deeper connection to the surrounding Gateway National Recreation Area and proving that the best camping in New York isn't necessarily a hundred miles away.
Very nice campground near the Staten Island bridge with public showers and electricity. Easy access to Manhattan in less than 1 hour with a bit of driving to get the ferryboat that offers a free water view of Statue of Liberty.
Jul 16, 2024 · Gheorghe Curelet-BalanThe campsite was well-maintained and offered all the basic amenities that I needed for a comfortable stay. The location was perfect, providing easy access to the city while still feeling like I was in the great outdoors. I loved being able to enjoy a campfire under the stars while still being just a short drive away from all the city's attractions.
Mar 27, 2023 · Alex SherIf I could give 50 stars, I would. This is simply one of the loveliest and most pleasant camping experiences I've ever had. If you're feeling that $30 is a little steep for tent camping and are wondering why the price tag, just go for it-- you will soon realize that you're getting your money's worth and more! First off, free firewood every night is just amazing. Being surrounded by nature and cut-off from the daily noise but still being in New York City is just amazing. Walking distance to the abandoned Fort Collins and South Beach-- amazing. There are seven cozy campsites, each with a tent pad and fire pit/ grill. There are great showers and bathrooms. Plenty of shade. And most of all, the rangers are some of the most dedicated, helpful, knowledgeable, and just plain friendly that you will ever find. Especially ranger Kathy, who took great care of us during our two-night stay. Lots of tourists do utilize this campground, so be sure to book your stay in advance. There is nothing I would change about this campsite!
Jul 16, 2017 · Joe CorreiaThe batteries and fort are beautiful and worth checking out. Very cool. Of course the view of the Verrazano and Narrows are spectacular. The campground itself looked pretty, didn't get to check out the bathrooms. The only downside is, the beach is absolutely disgusting, even for one on Staten Island. Tampon applicators everywhere along with other debris. You could see the garbage floating in the water everywhere. Spiders on the beach as well! We had been planning to spend one night at the campground and much of the day before on the beach, but I will be cancelling the reservation because the beach is far too gross to spend any amount of time on. I know there's not much that can be done with the water because it's from the harbor, but at least they could clean the beach every so often so families can use it.
Jul 10, 2018 · Madeline T.Amazing views of my beloved Brooklyn in a beautiful natural setting it's so far into the base that it is on water in the edge of the forest. I watched a deer much away all day on the beach grass. Only complaint is that "hot" water was not even close to hot so plan your showering accordingly! Best $30 stay in NYC
