Introduction / Overview
For New York residents seeking a genuine escape into nature without sacrificing the comforts of a clean, well-maintained facility, Cardinal Campground in Campbell, NY, presents the ideal destination. Nestled in the peaceful, rural setting of the Southern Tier and within easy reach of the famed Finger Lakes Region, this family campground is a beloved local secret for “old-fashioned family camping.” It stands out specifically for its quiet, tranquil atmosphere, which is highly praised by returning guests who are looking to unplug from the constant bustle of everyday life.
Cardinal Campground prides itself on being a small, private operation focused on providing a relaxing environment. It is a place where you can truly relax and enjoy the natural beauty of Upstate New York. Guests frequently mention the calm ambiance, where the sounds of bull frogs, peepers, and birds replace the noise of traffic. The owners are noted for being friendly and attentive, ensuring the grounds, including the spacious sites and open grassy areas, are always well-kept and meticulously mowed. Whether you are looking for a quick weekend getaway, an extended two-week family vacation, or a seasonal home base, Cardinal Campground offers a wholesome environment that encourages memory-making through simple pleasures like campfires, bike rides, and swimming.
Offering a mix of large, open sites for group camping and shaded, wooded lots for greater privacy, the campground is primarily designed for RV and trailer campers, although cozy cabin rentals are also available for those without their own rig. It serves as a perfect stepping stone for exploring the cultural and natural wonders of the greater Finger Lakes area, including world-renowned museums and picturesque state parks, before returning to the peaceful quiet of your site.
Location and Accessibility
Cardinal Campground is strategically located at 7323 Dee Rd, Campbell, NY 14821. Situated just off the main highways, it offers excellent accessibility from various parts of New York State and the surrounding region. It is perfectly positioned in the scenic Southern Tier, a short drive from the cultural and historic heart of the area.
The campground’s location is central to several major Finger Lakes attractions. It is only a short distance from the world-famous Corning Museum of Glass, The Rockwell Museum, and the Glenn Curtiss Museum. Natural wonders are also easily reached, including the stunning waterfalls and gorges of Watkins Glen State Park. This positioning makes it an ideal home base for day trips exploring wineries, hiking trails, and local state parks.
A helpful note for local New York travelers is the directional guidance from previous guests. When using a GPS system and arriving from the east, it is strongly advised to take the road out of Campbell (likely Exit 39 or 40 for Savona off I-86) and to avoid taking a more western exit like Exit 41, which may lead you up a notoriously long and rough dirt road. Following the well-established routes will ensure a smoother arrival to this peaceful, rural retreat.

From the friendly owners to the serene atmosphere, Cardinal Campground embodies the ideal blend of accessibility, affordability, and genuine tranquility that New Yorkers look for in a quality family getaway.
I've stayed here a few times and it's quite nice. I live about 90 minutes from here but its worth the drive. If you are looking for a quiet, small, and well kept campground: come here.
Feb 08, 2024 · Logan WheelerWe were there recently visiting family for 2 1/2 weeks. It was so peaceful and the owners are great. Area was well kept and mowed. Firepit and picnic table at each site. I didn't use the bathrooms, pool or laundry facilities. The only downside was no sewer hookup, but they offer weekly clean outs for a small fee. If you go, be sure to take the road out of Campbell (I think it's exit 39 off the highway or 40, Savona), NOT the more western one if you're heading east; GPS may take you off exit 41 up a very long and rough dirt road.
Aug 28, 2023 · Kathleen HudsonHad a great time at CC this summer. Went on a wine tour of the finger lakes and camped here. The owners are an extremely nice family who will go out of their way to make the guests happy. They have very large sites with water and electricity and most of the guests are long term campers...so its nice an quiet. Thanks so much for a great weekend!
Sep 06, 2014 · T.j. RissingThis was the first time at cardinal campground in 20 yrs. Very nice, lots of shade, big sites. Our rig was to long to access the dump station. Everything else was fine. Friendly, and quiet.
Sep 08, 2020 · Bill HargraveVery nice family employees who made sure we had everything we needed. Nothing but peace and quiet. Would have given 5 stars but our purchased firewood was too green to burn. Would definitely go back !
