Cottonhill Campground About
Hello, fellow Georgians! If you're an outdoor enthusiast, an RV adventurer, or simply looking for a serene escape where you can connect with nature, look no further than Cottonhill Campground in Fort Gaines. Nestled on the beautiful shores of Lake Walter F. George, this U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) park is consistently praised as a "beautiful campground" that offers a peaceful and well-maintained environment for your next outdoor adventure.
What truly sets Cottonhill Campground apart is its remarkable blend of natural beauty and excellent facilities. Imagine waking up to the sounds of nature, spotting "lots of deer and birds," and ending your day with "beautiful sunsets" over the lake. Whether you're seeking a quiet retreat or an active outdoor experience, this campground provides the perfect backdrop. Visitors frequently highlight the "friendly hosts" and the overall welcoming atmosphere, ensuring a pleasant and comfortable stay for everyone.
For RVers, the convenience is a major draw. Many sites boast "paved sites" and "FHUs" (Full Hookups), meaning you'll have electricity, water, and sewer connections right at your spot. This makes setting up your rig a breeze, allowing more time for relaxation and recreation. While some sites, particularly on "Old Mill Road," might not be directly on the lake, they are still highly recommended for being "large and well taken care of," offering ample space and privacy. Even from sites not directly on the water, you might still catch a glimpse of the lake from your patio, as one camper noted from site #22.
Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Cottonhill Campground maintains a high standard of cleanliness and organization, which is a common characteristic of COE parks. This commitment to quality ensures that facilities like restrooms and bathhouses are "extra clean," contributing to a comfortable experience for all campers. Plus, the "reasonably priced" sites offer fantastic value for the amenities and beautiful surroundings provided.
While some campers have noted minor considerations, such as occasional "loud traffic from adjacent hard road" at certain sites, or the need for better trash can availability at the beach area, the overwhelming sentiment is positive. The natural beauty, the quality of the sites, and the friendly staff contribute to a highly enjoyable experience that keeps campers coming back. Many even consider it "one of our favorites," having stayed in dozens of campgrounds across the country.
Whether you're a Georgian looking for a tranquil weekend getaway, a fishing enthusiast keen on exploring the "Big Bass Capital of the World" that is Lake Walter F. Cottonhill Campground is situated at 177 Campground Dr, Fort Gaines, GA 39851, USA. This address places it directly on the shores of Lake Walter F. George (also widely known as Lake Eufaula), a massive reservoir spanning the border between Georgia and Alabama, created by the Walter F. George Dam on the Chattahoochee River. This prime lakeside location is a major draw for water enthusiasts and those seeking scenic views.
Fort Gaines is located in Southwest Georgia, offering a relatively accessible destination for campers from various parts of our state. From major cities like Albany, the drive to Fort Gaines is approximately an hour and a half to two hours. From Columbus, it's a similar travel time. While it's a bit further for those coming from the Atlanta metropolitan area (typically a 3 to 3.5-hour drive), it makes for an ideal longer weekend or week-long getaway, offering a distinct change of pace and scenery.
Access to the campground is generally straightforward, with Campground Drive leading directly off local routes into the park. As a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) property, the roads within the campground are typically well-maintained, designed to accommodate RVs of various sizes. However, as noted in reviews, some individual sites may have "odd angles and dips" or "steep driveways," so reviewing the campground map or calling ahead to discuss your rig's needs is advisable, especially for larger vehicles.
The surrounding area of Fort Gaines and the broader Southwest Georgia region offers a blend of small-town charm and natural attractions. While the campground provides ample activities, the town of Fort Gaines itself has historical significance, and nearby Providence Canyon State Park (Georgia's "Little Grand Canyon") is a stunning geological wonder worth exploring for a day trip. The convenience of being located directly on Lake Walter F. George, known for its excellent fishing and boating, ensures that water-based recreation is readily available right from the campground.

As a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) campground, Cottonhill Campground generally offers standardized pricing and benefits that are consistent across COE parks, rather than frequent, limited-time "promotions" in the commercial sense. However, these standard offerings often represent excellent value, especially for certain groups.
The most significant "special offer" available at Cottonhill Campground, common to many federal campgrounds, is the discount for holders of the America the Beautiful – National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass series. Specifically:
- Senior Pass (formerly Golden Age Passport): U.S. citizens or permanent residents aged 62 or over can receive a 50% discount on standard amenity fees, which often includes camping fees. This makes an already "reasonably priced" campground even more affordable for eligible seniors.
- Access Pass (formerly Golden Access Passport): U.S. citizens or permanent residents with permanent disabilities can also receive a 50% discount on standard amenity fees.
The standard nightly rate for full hookup sites is typically around $26. For tent/primitive sites with electric and group water, the cost is around $22 a night. These prices are highly competitive for the amenities and lakeside location offered. While not a "promotion," the affordability itself is a major draw.
It's important to note that reservations, especially for popular lakeside or highly-rated sites, are highly recommended, particularly during peak seasons and holidays. These can usually be made through the National Recreation Reservation System (Recreation.gov). While there might not be "flash sales," booking in advance ensures you secure your preferred spot.
For the most accurate and up-to-date pricing information, details on pass acceptance, and availability, campers should visit Recreation.gov or call Cottonhill Campground directly. The value of staying at Cottonhill lies in its consistent quality, beautiful setting, and the benefit of federal pass discounts, making it an excellent choice for budget-conscious Georgians seeking a high-quality outdoor experience.

Customer Reviews
Beautiful campground. Friendly hosts. Old Mill Road sites are the best even though they are not right on the lake. The sites are large and well taken care of. If you go to the beach area you will see beautiful sunsets! Very nice dog park. We will return.
Peaceful and reasonably priced campground! The paved sites are a bonus, as well as FHUs. Many spots on the lake, site #22 isn’t. Could see some of the lake from our patio. Patio side overlooks the road, but up on an incline, so it feels more private. Saw lots of deer and birds! Recommend reviewing the campground map, or calling, to see if the site is suitable for your rig and vehicle,or clearance if you use satellite. Plenty of parking available near some sites, but not others. Many also have odd angles and dips. Work remotely, and Starlink service isn’t working at this site. T-Mobile did have 2 bars sometimes, & Hotspot worked. There are pull throughs and buddy sites. A few things that would improve the campground…..is if the public swimming location, with a playground, had a trash can available. Also, if the grass was mowed and ant piles treated.
Great campground where the campsites are not on top of each other! The shower and bathrooms were kept clean and stocked. Having access to the laundry facilities was perfect after more than a week on the road.
We have camped at this campground twice during summer and early fall. It’s pretty and peaceful camping place. If you can take the campsites just next to the water you get breathtaking view from you camper out rent. We did not notice any animals other than deer. Toilets were clean and the host at the entrance was very helpfully in answering all our questions
Update in 8/2022 I've been coming to this campground ever since i was a teenager. It hasn't changed much. Glad they have full hook ups & water but they dont maintain the mowing like they used too. We went camping again at Cotton Hill. Very disappointing they still not mowing like they use too. Grass so high & some of the camping spots wasn't cleaned off. Can't really fish from the shore in spots. Grass is so tall still we should have brought our weedeater. 7/2021 The host that checked us in was Mr. Marvin. He was very friendly and helpful. Bathrooms were clean. Great camping sites. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars because the grass so high (needs mowing) and hard to fish from shore because of all the water grass and weeds all in the water. We had to go to the boat landing to fish off of the dock there.
