Hello, fellow Marylanders! When it comes to enjoying the natural beauty of our state, camping often comes to mind as a perfect way to escape, unwind, and reconnect with the outdoors. Maryland boasts a variety of campgrounds, each offering a different experience. Today, we’re going to take a look at Crow's Nest Family Campground in Thurmont, MD. Our aim is to provide a factual and informative overview based on available public information, to help you, as local users, make informed decisions about your next outdoor adventure.
Finding the right campground that matches your expectations and needs is crucial for a pleasant experience. While we aim for a friendly and professional tone, our primary goal is always to present an accurate picture based on the data at hand. Let's delve into what we know about Crow's Nest Family Campground in Thurmont, a location that has been part of the Maryland camping landscape for many years.
Crow's Nest Family Campground is located in Thurmont, Maryland, a region known for its proximity to Catoctin Mountain Park and Cunningham Falls State Park, offering a scenic mountainous backdrop. Public information and available reviews suggest that the campground has undergone significant changes in recent years, particularly concerning its management and current operating conditions. Historically, some past visitors recall the campground as a "nice" place for family camping from the mid-20th century. However, more recent feedback paints a different picture, indicating potential challenges with maintenance, safety, and management under newer oversight.
It appears the campground may primarily cater to longer-term or seasonal residents, rather than short-term recreational campers, given mentions of "lot rent" and "ancient embedded trailers." While the concept of a family campground in a mountainous setting holds appeal, prospective visitors should be aware that the current state of the facilities and management practices are a significant point of concern for recent reviewers. This overview aims to highlight these publicly available observations to provide a realistic perspective for anyone considering a visit.
Crow's Nest Family Campground is located at 335 MD-77, Thurmont, MD 21788, USA. This address places it in Frederick County, a popular region for outdoor enthusiasts due to its mountainous terrain and abundant state parks and natural areas. Maryland Route 77 (MD-77) is a state highway that runs through Thurmont, providing direct access to the campground.
The location itself, "in the mountains," suggests potential for scenic beauty and access to nearby attractions like Cunningham Falls State Park and Catoctin Mountain Park, which offer hiking trails, natural features, and recreational opportunities. For locals in Frederick County and surrounding areas of Maryland, the campground's address makes it relatively easy to reach by car. However, accessibility to specific services within the campground, or the general ease of navigating the property, might be impacted by the conditions described in recent reviews. While the geographic location offers promise for outdoor lovers, the internal conditions of the park, as reported, would be a key consideration for visitors.
Based on the provided customer reviews, there are significant concerns regarding the fundamental services expected at a campground, particularly for longer-term residents.
It is critical for anyone considering Crow's Nest Family Campground to verify the availability and reliability of all essential services directly with the management and, if possible, from independent sources before committing to a stay.
Based on the provided customer feedback, the "features" and "highlights" of Crow's Nest Family Campground are heavily overshadowed by significant reported deficiencies and negative experiences. Therefore, this section will reflect these observations directly and factually.
It is evident from the reviews that the actual experience at Crow's Nest Family Campground currently diverges significantly from what one might expect from a typical "family campground."
Given the extremely negative and concerning nature of the provided customer reviews, which detail issues such as alleged "price gouging," unexplained charges ("getting ready to move fee"), and unfulfilled promises regarding included utilities (water and electricity), it is not possible to describe any positive "promotions or special offers" at Crow's Nest Family Campground.
The reviews indicate a lack of fair and transparent pricing, with charges that customers perceive as illegitimate or arbitrary. There is no public data or positive feedback to suggest any standard promotions (e.g., seasonal discounts, loyalty programs) or special offers that would enhance a visitor's experience or provide value. Instead, the focus of the feedback is on unexpected and disputed charges.
Therefore, any prospective visitor would need to exercise extreme caution and meticulously clarify all pricing, included services, and potential additional fees directly with the campground management, ideally in writing, before making any commitments. Based on the current public data, there are no "promotions" that can be factually presented as beneficial to the consumer.
For those who may still need to contact Crow's Nest Family Campground, perhaps for inquiries about existing arrangements or to seek further information, here are the publicly available contact details:
Address: 335 MD-77, Thurmont, MD 21788, USA
Phone: (301) 271-7632
Mobile Phone: +1 301-271-7632
It is strongly advised to approach any communication with clear questions and to document all interactions, especially concerning pricing and services.
Based on the overwhelmingly negative and severe customer reviews provided, Crow's Nest Family Campground in Thurmont, Maryland, as it currently operates, appears to be not suitable for locals (or indeed, any visitors) seeking a safe, well-managed, or enjoyable camping experience.
The recurring themes in the recent feedback highlight critical issues that directly impact suitability:
While the geographic location in the scenic Thurmont mountains holds natural appeal, the internal conditions and management practices described make it highly improbable that any local resident would find this campground a desirable or suitable option for either recreational camping or long-term living. The repeated pleas in reviews for "the state park take over and makes it great again" underscore the severity of the perceived decline and the unsuitability of the current state for those seeking a positive outdoor or residential experience in Maryland. Prospective visitors are strongly advised to seek alternative camping options in the Maryland region.

Trashy place. You think being in the mountains it be great for those retired. No water or electricity. Yet still charge lot rent. I mean making 10 to 15 grand a month, where's the money going? Now they want to evict my dad because i said dont pay rent until the fix the electricity, its in the lease that its included.. Not safe and not managed well at all. I hope the state park takes over and makes it great again!! Poorly managed once the son in law took over. I ask prior residents as well.. I really hope thurmont does something about this place
Feb 06, 2025 · Miranda BaugherI used to stay there with my family to camp from 1965-1995ish and it was so nice. Now it is a dump site for trash and ancient embedded trailers and skeery dudes. I drove in to check it out today and turned around to get out asap. DO NOT GO THERE!
Nov 09, 2024 · Vickie LordSuper disgusting camp ground. Pool, Haha yeah right. Empty and horrendous. Super creepy but not in a good way. Do not recommend. Btw if you value your car or truck don't attempt to even go up into the drive way!

May 06, 2025 · JimmyRay ShanahanHoly Trash (literally) this place is a public dump for trash, it looks like a homeless camp, we counted 24 stray cats just running all over, these people could not pay me to camp there. My son and I were looking for a tent campsite and drove through the crow's nest. The swimming pool has no water and is all overgrown, I give this place a -10. Horrible. We did find a nice spot in Cunningham falls it was nice, clean and only $33.00 a night. RUN FAR AWAY FROM THE CROW'S NEST camping ground. RUN!!!!!! Don't let the pictures posted fool you.
