Introduction / Overview
For New Jersey residents dreaming of a quintessential Jersey Shore vacation, Depot Travel Park offers an unparalleled camping experience in the heart of historic Cape May County. Situated in charming West Cape May, this family-owned and operated campground has been a trusted destination since 1972. It holds a distinct advantage that RV and tent campers consistently seek: it is proudly known as the closest campground to Cape May's world-class beaches.
Depot Travel Park provides a clean, safe, and organized environment across its approximately 240 sites, catering to both transient visitors and seasonal campers. The community is celebrated for its commitment to exceptional cleanliness. Customer reviews frequently highlight the park's immaculate condition, particularly the shower and laundry facilities, which are often described as being "nicer and better kept than the hotels in Cape May." This dedication to spotless facilities, combined with the professional and accommodating staff, sets a high standard for family camping in South Jersey.
The park's appeal is rooted in its ability to blend modern convenience with a classic Jersey Shore atmosphere. While the sites may be "fairly tight" due to the premium location, this density fosters a strong sense of community, with many seasonal and overnight campers described as friendly and welcoming. The entire park operates with a focus on safety, enforcing strict speed limits to protect the many children, pets, and cyclists moving throughout the paved roads. Depot Travel Park is open seasonally, welcoming New Jersey locals and travelers from May 1st through early October, making it the perfect base for enjoying the Victorian charm and coastal attractions of the Cape May area.
Location and Accessibility
The location of Depot Travel Park at 800 Broadway, West Cape May, NJ 08204, USA, is undeniably its most powerful draw. This West Cape May address places campers just one mile from the beautiful beaches and the historic charm of Victorian Cape May. In a region where location dictates the value, being "as close to the beach as you can get with an RV" is a major selling point.
Accessibility around the area is exceptionally easy and encouraged by the campground's setup. The park’s proximity to local attractions allows residents to leave their vehicles parked and utilize more enjoyable modes of transportation. The entire Cape May area is highly bike-friendly, and many visitors, including families, happily use e-bikes or standard bicycles to tour the area, reach the beach, or visit the nearby shopping and restaurant districts. For those who prefer a different mode of transport, golf cart rentals are available right at the park, providing a fun and convenient way to explore the town’s attractions and scenic areas.
The location offers excellent access to the entire Cape May Peninsula. In addition to being minutes from the Cape May Promenade, shopping, and dining, Depot Travel Park is only a short drive from other popular Jersey Shore destinations, including the lively boardwalk and amusements of Wildwood. Furthermore, the park benefits from being slightly set back off the main road, minimizing traffic noise and contributing to the peaceful atmosphere praised by transit campers. The local amenities, including a convenient farm market located near the entrance, further enhance the experience of this perfectly situated South Jersey campground.

Conclusion: Why This Place Is Suitable for Locals
For New Jersey residents, Depot Travel Park represents the ultimate opportunity to experience the beauty and charm of Cape May without committing to the astronomical hotel or rental property costs of the immediate shoreline. It allows locals to leverage the value of their own RV or camping gear in a location that is truly irreplaceable. The primary reason for its suitability is the sheer convenience of being only one mile from the beach and within easy biking distance of the entire Victorian district. This "premium location" is the reason the pricing, while higher than inland parks, is considered a worthwhile investment by regular visitors who understand the value of minimizing travel time and maximizing beach time.
The park's family-friendly atmosphere, supported by two playgrounds and strict safety rules (like the 5 mph speed limit), offers peace of mind to parents and grandparents. Furthermore, the commitment to cleanliness, with facilities surpassing those of some hotels, ensures a comfortable and pleasant stay. While it may be subject to external noise factors (like a fire whistle or neighboring wood chipping), these are minor trade-offs for a clean, secure, and fully serviced camping experience in the most desirable coastal town in South Jersey. For any New Jersey local seeking a reliable, high-quality, and perfectly situated base for their next Jersey Shore vacation, Depot Travel Park remains a highly recommended destination.

We found the staff accommodating and cordial. Booked less than a week before and they allowed a hold without a mailed in deposit. The whole park is sparklingly clean including the shower/laundry houses and playgrounds. We are transit campers and stayed on 2 sites over 3 days. Rented a golf cart and used that to tour around as well as our e-bike. The park is fairly tight with many campers, dogs and bikes moving around so it wouldn’t make any sense to not be paying attention to your speed so we had no issues there. It’s nice that the sites are set back off the road so there’s no traffic noise. There are 3 things that kept this from a 5 star review and honestly, mostly beyond the owners control. 1. The fire whistle is right next door and rather annoying if it goes off late at night. 2. Wood chipping on the neighboring property at 7:00 am wasn’t pleasant. 3. We did feel the pricing is at a premium and do understand the pros and cons there but a bit steep - yes, you’re as close to the beach as you can get with an RV but it was about $85 per night for water/electric/cable and another $5 for sewer hookup. We’re used to half that but like I said, premium location = premium cost. Additionally, we found the seasonal campers to be pretty friendly too - maybe we just didn’t give anyone a reason not to be nice IDK. Based on our experience, would happily stay here again.
Aug 08, 2025 · Tim HarringtonWe camped here for the first time. The staff is great and the people camping there are very nice. The bathroom and shower facilities are nicer and better kept than the hotels in Cape May. Highly recommended!
Sep 14, 2025 · Ed KrausserI just want to say that I booked this place almost a year in advanced because we want to came back this year for the festival BCMF 2025. We did enjoy this spot last year because the shower and restroom are just back of the spot. We were pretty upset at the arrival because the shower and restroom are closed. We are party of 5 on our RV so it’s not really funny to use the RV restrooms and have to flush twice a day that’s why we took your campground and this spot. This morning my crew went to the others restrooms and toilets and they were close for maintenance. I think we should receive an email before arrival to say restrooms are closed for maintenance. So maybe we would ask for a refund or have the choice to choose another spot.
Jun 22, 2025 · Vandoos RegiementThe RV park is family owned. One of the sisters complains incessantly about all the tourists "ruining HER town". Kind of a wierd way to make your living while...telling your customers theyre unwelcome outsiders ruining her town lol. She wont go out of her way to do anything to help anyone. Shes rude. The location is great. Zero amenities but youre a few blocks from the beach.
May 26, 2025 · Drama KingHad a great experience here this summer. Campground is very clean and quiet. Guests here seem to respect this place as well as other guests way more than other campgrounds in the area. I do not see how one could have a problem with the staff. Everyone we interacted with was super nice and hospitable. Maybe the people complaining are the problem? Yes, there are rules that they are strict on. It's their campground. If you do not like the rules, then go elsewhere!
