***Introduction / Overview***
For New York State residents looking for a vibrant Adirondack camping experience that expertly blends history with unparalleled convenience, **Lake George Battleground State Campground** is a distinctive choice. Managed by the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), this facility is strategically located just a quarter-mile from the bustling heart of Lake George Village. This is not a secluded wilderness retreat; instead, it offers a functional camping base for those who want immediate access to the resort town atmosphere, dining, shopping, and, most importantly, the crystal-clear waters of Lake George.
The campground offers 68 tent and trailer sites nestled amidst a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees, providing a shady canopy, even though the sites are known to be relatively close together. Its name is derived from its historical significance, as the grounds were central to numerous military activities during the Colonial period, including the French and Indian War. History enthusiasts will find themselves setting up camp near self-guided historical interpretive paths at the adjacent Battlefield Park. While the close proximity to the village and the main US-9 highway means the atmosphere can be lively and sites may lack the deep privacy of more remote Adirondack camps—an important consideration for local users—its convenience for accessing Lake George's main attractions is unmatched. It is the perfect spot for New Yorkers prioritizing the lake and town activities over a deep wilderness experience.
***Location and Accessibility***
Lake George Battleground State Campground is situated at 2224 US-9, Lake George, NY 12845, USA, placing it in an exceptional spot in the Adirondack region's most popular resort town. The location is its single greatest asset for New York State residents traveling to the area for convenience and activity.
The primary appeal is the effortless walkability to key destinations. Campers can leave their vehicle at the site (limited to two per site) and walk within minutes to Lake George Village for ice cream, restaurants, shops, and entertainment. Crucially, the campground is a short stroll from the public Lake George Beach, often referred to as "Million Dollar Beach," where visitors can sunbathe and swim. Furthermore, the campground is located directly across Route 9 from the entrance to the Prospect Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway and the start of the Prospect Mountain hiking trail, offering stunning 100-mile views encompassing up to five states from the summit. While the location on a major route means campers should expect some noise from traffic and nearby village activities, the payoff is unparalleled access to one of New York's most famous vacation destinations.

***Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals***
Lake George Battleground State Campground is uniquely suited for New York residents because it offers a highly convenient, affordable state-run gateway to the region’s most popular vacation hub. For many New Yorkers, a trip to Lake George is a summer tradition, and this campground provides the most practical basecamp possible. It saves locals the expense of village lodging while placing them within a short walk of all the major resort attractions, from dining and shopping to the Million Dollar Beach and the historical sites.
While the campground has a reputation for being crowded and occasionally loud due to its non-remote location—a condition that some campers find disruptive, as evidenced by a few highly negative reviews citing noise and staff unprofessionalism—it fulfills a crucial need: easy, pedestrian access to the lake and town. The trade-off for less privacy is maximum convenience, which is highly valued by families and groups who want to spend their time exploring the historical park, climbing Prospect Mountain, or simply enjoying the village life and water activities without the hassle of daily driving and parking fees. The core feature of hot showers, flush toilets, and a trailer dump station ensures that even without hookups, the stay remains comfortable and manageable for a short- or long-term Adirondack adventure.

We had a very upsetting experience at this campsite. Our group came with multiple families, paid the full $60 per person fee, and set up our tents. We understand that we received noise complaints and we were doing our best to quiet down. However, when the owners came to speak to us, instead of addressing the situation professionally, they repeatedly told our group to “shut up” (about 5–7 times) without letting us explain that we were already settling down for the night. That kind of language was extremely disrespectful. It shouldn’t matter whether we were paying customers or not—no one deserves to be spoken to in that way. Because of how we were treated, we decided not to stay the night. When we told the owners we wouldn’t be coming back, their response was something along the lines of, “Good, we don’t want you back.” We left feeling completely disrespected and unwelcome. At the very least, customers deserve to be spoken to with professionalism and courtesy. We believe that a refund, an apology, or at the very least, a partial refund is appropriate for the situation, as we did not even end up staying the night.
Aug 22, 2025 · Rayna DhakalFor the three days my family have booked and planned to stay at this campground, we only lasted one day, as our experience here was pretty bad, my only positive about this place is ease of access to town and Lake George itself. The "campgrounds" did not really feel like campgrounds as you were right next to other people, and our campsite did not come with any picnic tables like the other sites next to us did, we complained about it with the staff, and although friendly, we had to get the table ourself from a neighboring empty lot. From our arrival to the next morning, my family and I were just restless from the conditions, and so decided we would leave that morning. At least we also had a well kept comfort station nearby, however that was littered with so many bugs, especially in the shower rooms, every side of the wall had bugs on it, enough to creep me out. We may have just gotten unlucky with what we had to deal with and should try finding another lot in the campground to stay at, and maybe I will leave a more positive review, but as of right now, that experience was horrible for us.
Aug 25, 2025 · Jezreel EsguerraThe location of this campground was the best thing going for it: it's within walking distance to the beach and the Village, and there are a lot or nearby attractions. The bathrooms were a;sp kept reasonably clean, especially the main one with the showers. About half of the fire pits at the campsites did not have any grates (see picture), so they are OK for a fire, but useless to cook with. Unfortunately, due to proximity to the road, it was very noisy, even at late hours of the night. The camping spaces are also very close to one another, especially the ones at the front loop, which exacerbated the noise from neighboring tents (such as the one next to ours who chatted and joked around at 3 AM, and prevented my family and I to get restful sleep); this in turn contributed to our decision to cut our stay short and check out early.
Jun 22, 2025 · Alfred RumondorI was here camping 2 days ago on August 20th when a group of people nearby got three complaints from some other people saying that they were too loud just because they were laughing and talking, having a good time. Then at the third compliant (they were just making their beds), the owner came over to them and cursed them out and told them to shut up, and the family left. And they spent over $300 and didn’t get a refund!!! This is ridiculous and no one should be treated like that
Aug 22, 2025 · Jenesis MichelMy family and I enjoy our spot where we stayed. Our next door neighbors very nice and welcoming. and the only thing is our first night there people screaming and being drunk was annoying. overall i highly recommend this place.
