Camping and RVing have long been popular activities for North Carolinians, providing an escape from the everyday hustle and an opportunity to connect with nature. Ponderosa Campground and RV Park aims to fulfill these needs, making it a noteworthy destination for many in the state.
The appeal of campgrounds like Ponderosa lies in their ability to provide a flexible and often more affordable alternative to traditional lodging. RV parks, in particular, are designed to cater to the specific requirements of recreational vehicles, offering necessary hookups and amenities that allow travelers to enjoy all the comforts of home on the go. For North Carolina residents, this means the ability to explore various parts of their beautiful state, from the mountains to the coast, with a reliable and comfortable place to park their home-on-wheels.
Understanding what a campground offers is crucial for planning your trip. From the type of sites available to the amenities on site and the overall atmosphere, each element contributes to the camping experience. This guide will delve into the specifics of Ponderosa Campground and RV Park, providing local North Carolina users with valuable insights to help them determine if it’s the right fit for their next adventure or extended stay. We’ll explore its location, the services it provides, its unique features, and how to get in touch for more information.
One of the most important considerations when choosing a campground is its location and how easily it can be accessed. Ponderosa Campground and RV Park is ideally situated at 100 Ponderosa Rd, Weldon, NC 27890, USA. This address places it just off Interstate 95, a major north-south artery that traverses the East Coast of the United States. For North Carolina travelers, this means exceptional convenience, especially for those who are passing through the state on a longer journey or those seeking a quick and easy stop.
The strategic location near I-95 makes Ponderosa Campground an excellent choice for "snowbirds" heading south for the winter or returning north in the spring, as well as for anyone embarking on a road trip along the East Coast. Its proximity to this major interstate eliminates the need for extensive detours, saving time and fuel. This ease of access is frequently highlighted by visitors as a significant advantage of the park.
Weldon, NC, itself offers a local charm and provides essential services that campers might need. While the park offers a quiet retreat, it’s not isolated from the conveniences of town. Roanoke Rapids, a slightly larger community, is also nearby, offering additional shopping, dining, and other amenities. This allows campers to stock up on supplies, enjoy a meal out, or attend to any other needs without venturing too far from their campsite.
The area around Weldon and Roanoke Rapids is also known for its historical significance and natural beauty. The Roanoke River, a prominent feature of the region, offers opportunities for fishing and boating. While Ponderosa Campground provides a peaceful setting, its location ensures that guests are still within reach of local attractions and the necessary infrastructure for a comfortable stay. The balance between accessibility to major routes and a sense of quiet retreat makes Ponderosa Campground and RV Park a practical and appealing option for North Carolina campers.
Based on available public information and customer reviews, Ponderosa Campground and RV Park offers a range of services primarily focused on providing essential accommodations for RVs and campers. While it is described as a "basic park" by some, it aims to deliver the core necessities for a comfortable stay.
- Full Hook-ups: The campground provides full hook-ups, which typically include electricity (30 and/or 50 amp service), water, and sewer connections at each RV site. This is a crucial service for RV travelers, ensuring they have all the necessary utilities for their vehicle.
- Pull-Through Sites: Ponderosa Campground offers pull-through RV sites. These sites allow RVs to easily drive in and out without the need for complex backing maneuvers, making arrivals and departures more convenient, especially for larger rigs.
- Shaded Sites: Many sites within the park are shaded, offering a welcome respite from the North Carolina sun, particularly during warmer months. This can enhance comfort and provide a more pleasant outdoor experience.
- Long-Term Stays: The park accommodates both short-term overnight stays and longer-term residents, including those looking to settle in for a week or even a few months. This flexibility is a significant draw for travelers with varied needs.
- On-Site Management: The presence of an owner, such as "Greg" as mentioned in a positive review, suggests a hands-on approach to management, which can contribute to a more personalized and attentive experience for guests.
It is important to note that some reviews indicate the absence of certain amenities commonly found in other campgrounds, such as laundry facilities or public bathrooms. Therefore, visitors should be prepared to be self-sufficient in terms of these services, relying on their RV's amenities or seeking external options in the nearby towns of Weldon or Roanoke Rapids.
While some reviews suggest a basic offering, Ponderosa Campground and RV Park does offer several features that enhance the camping experience for its visitors. These highlights contribute to its appeal as a convenient and accessible stop in North Carolina.

- Easy Access Off I-95: This is a major highlight for travelers. The campground's straightforward access from the interstate makes it an ideal overnight stop for those on long journeys, minimizing travel time and stress.
- "Gem" for Travelers: One reviewer aptly described the park as a "gem just off I-95," indicating that despite its basic nature, it offers significant value and convenience for those in transit.
- Pet-Friendly Policy (Implied): While not explicitly stated in the provided snippets, most RV parks and campgrounds welcome pets, and the nature of RV travel often means pets are part of the journey. Prospective visitors should confirm their pet policy directly with the park.
Some feedback also mentions areas for improvement, such as infrequent grass cutting which can lead to bugginess in summer. This is helpful information for potential visitors, allowing them to prepare accordingly, perhaps by bringing insect repellent. Despite these points, the park's fundamental advantages – a quiet setting, friendly management, and prime location – remain strong draws for its target audience.

Customer Reviews
The park is quiet. However, I think it is too expensive for what it offers. It is a basic park. It has no laundry, no bathrooms, in summer they don't cut the grass frequently, they let the grass grow long enough to cut it which makes it very buggy. It seems to me that the charge is excessive per additional week.
Best campground and RV park near Roanoke Rapids, NC is in Weldon, NC! The owner, Greg, is awesome! I highly recommend this park, if your passing through or need a place to settle in for a week or a few months. A gem just off I-95.
Love this place , the owner is very niece and always makes sure everyone is happy , all packages are under his covered patio , very clean and quite ❤️
First the positives: 1) availability, no need to even reserve, perhaps not the case in April during striper bass run in the Roanoke river; 2) good number of shady sites; 3) plenty of full service sites (50A service only though). The negatives: 1) no bath house; 2) sites not paved or gravelled, they are either grass or muddy messes; 3) advertise $40/day (which is on the high side for what they offer) then when you get there they charge an additional $5/day if you use heat or A/C; 4) the owner/manager Greg appears nice until there is a problem then he is very unhelpful. I left a tool on the site and it took 3 phone calls before he would answer, then he was very defensive claiming that he had looked for the tool and could not find it and that no one in the campground would take it because they were all honest people, as if he could vouch for everyone that stays there. I will not use them again and do not recommend.
We had issues while on the road which caused delay in our travels. My family needed a place to stay the night before we got back on the road. The owner allowed us to arrive later in the night and pay him in the morning. His kindness was very much appreciated after a rough day of travels.
