Nestled on the shores of the expansive Cecil M. Managed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Raccoon SRA provides a well-maintained and activity-rich environment for campers of all types, from tent enthusiasts to RV adventurers.

Whether you're planning a weekend fishing trip, a family vacation filled with swimming and hiking, or simply a quiet night under the stars, Raccoon SRA Campground aims to provide a memorable experience. Its popularity stems from a combination of excellent facilities, diverse recreational opportunities, and a commitment to maintaining a clean and friendly atmosphere. While some campers seek complete silence, Raccoon SRA balances the need for tranquility with the vibrant energy of outdoor recreation, making it a dynamic choice for many Hoosiers.

Location and Accessibility

Raccoon SRA Campground is situated in Union Township, IN 47872, USA. This places it firmly within Parke County, a region famous for its scenic beauty and recreational opportunities in west-central Indiana. The campground is an integral part of the much larger Raccoon State Recreation Area, which encompasses the 2,060-acre Cecil M. Harden Lake. The lake itself was formed by the damming of Big Raccoon Creek, primarily for flood control, but it has since become a hub for water-based recreation.

Access to Raccoon SRA Campground is generally straightforward. From major thoroughfares in Indiana, well-maintained state roads lead directly to the SRA's entrance. The main address for the SRA is often listed as 1588 S. Raccoon Parkway, Rockville, IN 47872, which leads directly to the main entrance gate. Once inside the SRA, signage directs visitors to the various campground loops. Its location in Union Township means it's conveniently accessible for residents from cities like Terre Haute, Indianapolis, and Lafayette, making it a popular choice for both weekend getaways and longer vacations without requiring extensive travel out of state. The paved roads within the SRA and the generally level campsites contribute to easy navigation for RVs and trailers.

Services Offered

Raccoon SRA Campground, as part of a well-regarded Indiana State Recreation Area, provides a comprehensive array of services designed to enhance the camping experience.

  • Modern Restroom and Shower Facilities: Campers can enjoy the convenience of modern restroom and shower facilities, which are regularly cleaned and maintained by park staff. This is a highly valued amenity, as noted by positive customer reviews. Features / Highlights

Raccoon SRA Campground stands out due to its impressive features and the wide range of activities available, making it a premier outdoor destination in Indiana.

  • Cecil M. Harden Lake (Raccoon Lake): The centerpiece of the SRA, this 2,060-acre lake is perfect for boating, fishing (well-stocked with bass, catfish, crappie, bluegill, and walleye), swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and water skiing.
  • Excellent Fishing Opportunities: The lake is renowned for its fishing, with multiple boat ramps, fishing piers, and ample shore fishing spots. The DNR actively stocks and maintains the fish population.
  • Extensive Trail System: The SRA offers several trails suitable for hiking and biking, ranging in difficulty from easy, ADA-paved paths to rugged trails with deep sandstone cliffs and scenic lake views. These trails wind through diverse habitats, including native forests and along Big Raccoon Creek.
  • Clean and Level Campsites: Many campsites are described as "nice level camp sites," which is a significant advantage for setting up tents and leveling RVs, ensuring a comfortable stay.
  • Friendly and Professional Staff: Customer reviews frequently mention "friendly workers," highlighting the positive interaction campers have with the park staff, contributing to a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Quiet at Night (Generally): While one review noted issues with generators, many campers appreciate the overall quiet ambiance at night, which is crucial for a relaxing camping experience. The park aims to provide a peaceful environment.
  • 3-D Archery Trail: For archery enthusiasts, a dedicated 3-D archery trail provides a unique recreational opportunity.
  • Proximity to Mansfield Roller Mill: The historic Mansfield Roller Mill, an 1880s flour mill with original equipment, is located just six miles south of US 36 off SR 59 and is managed by Raccoon SRA. It's open during various mill festivals, offering a historical and educational side trip.
Promotions or Special Offers

As a state-managed recreation area, Raccoon SRA Campground operates under the pricing and permit structures set by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. While specific "promotions" in the commercial sense are less common, there are ways to manage costs and take advantage of offerings.

  • Reduced Amenities/Rates in Off-Season: During the winter months (typically November through April), when water and modern restrooms may be turned off, camping is still available at reduced rates. This can be a great option for more rustic camping or for those who prefer fewer crowds.
  • Indiana State Park Annual Entrance Permits (AEPs): For frequent visitors to Indiana State Parks and SRAs, purchasing an annual entrance permit can provide significant savings. An in-state AEP is $50, and an out-of-state AEP is $70, allowing unlimited entry to all Indiana State Parks and SRAs for a year.
  • Golden Hoosier Permits: For qualifying Indiana residents (65 years or older, or those with certain disabilities), a Golden Hoosier Permit is available for $25, offering reduced entrance fees.
  • Online Reservations: While not a "promotion," using the online reservation system (e.g., through ReserveAmerica) allows campers to plan and secure their preferred sites well in advance, especially important during peak seasons and holidays.

It's always recommended to check the official Indiana DNR website or call Raccoon SRA directly for the most current pricing, seasonal information, and any specific event-related details.

NO A GOOD EXPERIENCE THIS YEAR! We have tent camped at Raccoon SRA for 10 plus years in non electric area. This year there were several RV's with generators running all night. We go there for the peace and quiet. Didn't get that this year.

Quiet campground with excellent rugged hiking. You get clean bathrooms and hot showers, paved parking and good shade at most spots. The stars are just gorgeous at night. We came for the solar eclipse but we'll definitely come again.
