Introduction / Overview
For Connecticut families and outdoor enthusiasts searching for an accessible, amenity-rich escape into nature, River Bend Campground in Oneco stands as a well-established, seasonal destination. Nestled within the picturesque "Quiet Corner" of Connecticut, close to the Rhode Island border, this campground offers a classic family camping experience rooted in interaction, recreation, and the simple pleasures of the outdoors. It is situated alongside the tranquil waters of the Moosup River, providing a beautiful backdrop for a weekend or week-long adventure.
River Bend Campground offers a variety of ways to stay, accommodating everything from large recreational vehicles to traditional tents, as well as several different types of rental units including rustic cabins and modern tiny homes. With approximately 160 sites, the campground manages to host a lively community atmosphere, offering a jam-packed schedule of activities and events throughout the season, which typically runs from mid-April to mid-October. While the campground has undergone a recent change in ownership to Modern America Campgrounds, leading to some noted shifts in the on-site atmosphere and pricing—with some long-time campers expressing a loss of the previous 'warm and welcoming' personalized touch and others commenting on high prices for basic items like firewood—the core offerings of clean sites, decent facilities, and a dedicated focus on family activities remain the foundation of the River Bend experience. It is a place where you can find both active entertainment and a quiet corner, despite some noted challenges with maintenance issues like sap from abundant pine trees.
Location and Accessibility
River Bend Campground enjoys a prime location in Oneco, a small community in the northeastern corner of Connecticut. The address is 41 Pond St, Oneco, CT 06373, USA. It is conveniently situated off Route 14A, allowing for relatively easy travel from major state highways. This accessibility makes it a practical choice for quick weekend trips or longer summer vacations without extensive travel. The campground's setting along the Moosup River and Oneco Pond provides natural beauty and direct water access, which is a major draw for aquatic activities. Furthermore, the area surrounding the campground is rich with local attractions, including nearby state parks like Pachaug State Forest and Hopeville Pond State Park, and is not too far from the major casinos and historical sites in Southeastern Connecticut, offering off-site entertainment options when desired. The proximity to a nearby rail trail also offers fantastic options for scenic walking and biking just a mile from the campground entrance.

River Bend Campground is a perfect destination for Connecticut residents because it delivers on the promise of a classic, fun-filled, and conveniently located family camping experience within the state. Its greatest strength lies in its activity-focused environment, offering a robust schedule of planned events that keeps children entertained and provides opportunities for family bonding—a true asset for busy parents.
While recent management changes have introduced some service-related inconsistencies, and guests have noted issues with things like sticky pine sap and what they perceive as high prices for incidentals, the core value proposition remains strong: clean, well-appointed sites (including full hookups for RVs), an on-site pool, and access to the beautiful Moosup River for water sports. For a Connecticut local, River Bend offers a chance to explore the stunning, undeveloped natural beauty of the Quiet Corner without leaving the state, providing a reliable, active, and enjoyable seasonal getaway that truly feels like a vacation from the everyday routine.

We’ve been coming here for three years and, until recently, it was an easy 5-star experience. Unfortunately, since the campground was bought by Modern America Campgrounds, we won’t be returning. The staff has become noticeably less friendly. One worker actually yelled at us for driving 5 mph—exactly the posted speed limit—while we’ve seen that same employee speeding around on a golf cart well above the limit. The double standard was frustrating and unprofessional. This campground used to feel warm and welcoming. Staff members remembered returning guests and made you feel valued. Now check-in is handled by disinterested teens who answer questions with “I don’t know.” It no longer has the same charm. Prices have also become unreasonable—$8 for five small pieces of firewood is excessive. Between the lack of hospitality and inflated costs, this no longer feels like the relaxing getaway it once was. For those spending their hard-earned money and precious family time, I recommend looking elsewhere.
Aug 22, 2025 · Thomas MulcahyCampground was nice.sites were decent, everyone was nice. And it was quiet . The reason I'm not giving it a 5 star review is due to the pine tree, sap was everywhere I mean everywhere. And personally I think there was a little to much trash on the ground,
Aug 18, 2025 · Ed SWas a fan of Riverbend before it was bought by the new management. People with developmental disabilities should never be outcasted or called out for being different especially upon a campgrounds negligence. Ignorance isn’t a good quality when it’s reflected in management and it can become toxic so you’ve lost my business along with many people I know. You don’t call people with disabilities… group home people it’s ignorant and unprofessional.
