While some may seek extensive recreational facilities, others prioritize peace, quiet, and a well-maintained site. Shady Oaks RV Campground's character, as described by its visitors, leans towards a tranquil and well-cared-for environment, making it particularly suitable for those who value a serene setting. The campground's address on Shady Oaks Road places it just a short distance from major transportation routes. It is approximately one-quarter mile north of U.S. Highway 30 and three miles east of Marshalltown. Services Offered

Shady Oaks RV Campground is described as a "ma & pa facility" with dedicated owners who are "constantly working to maintain it," suggesting a hands-on approach to management and resident care. This is a crucial service for RV travelers, ensuring a convenient and self-sufficient stay. There are 13 sites with full hookups, with 5 offering 50-amp service.
  • Big Rig Friendly Sites: Shady Oaks RV Campground accommodates larger RVs, with five drive-on (back-off) sites specifically designed for motor coaches up to 40 feet, and most other sites accommodating 30-foot-plus units. This ensures accessibility for a wide range of RV types.

They are also noted for their wealth of local historical knowledge, which can be a valuable service to visitors interested in the area.

  • Pet-Friendly: RV parks often accommodate pets, and while specific policies were not detailed, it's generally a common expectation.
  • Lawn Care: For long-term residents, lawn care for the leased lot is typically managed by the park, contributing to the overall tidy appearance mentioned by some.
Features / Highlights

Shady Oaks RV Campground offers several features and highlights that contribute to its appeal, particularly for those seeking a tranquil and well-maintained camping experience:

  • Beautifully Landscaped and Maintained: A key highlight noted by residents is the "beautifully landscaped campground" and the owners' constant work to "maintain it." This dedication to aesthetics and upkeep contributes significantly to the peaceful and pleasant atmosphere.
  • Peaceful and Homey Atmosphere: The campground is consistently described as "lovely, peaceful and homey," making it an ideal retreat for those looking to relax away from the hustle and bustle. This quiet environment is a strong draw.
  • Abundant Shade: True to its name, the campground is "tucked away under a thicket of oak trees," offering ample shade. This is a significant advantage, especially during Iowa's warm summer months, providing natural cooling and a pleasant outdoor experience.
  • Historic Significance: Shady Oaks is noted as "one of the oldest private campgrounds in Iowa (since 1850)" and its story is documented in a book. The namesake grove of bur oak trees is even on the Register of "Famous & Historic Trees," adding a unique historical dimension. The campground is also located on the old Lincoln Highway.
  • Friendly Owners/Family-Owned: The "ma & pa facility" aspect is a highlight, with owners described as "friendly w/o being pushy" and a "wealth of local historical knowledge." This personal touch contributes to the welcoming environment.

While one older review mentioned "No amenities other than bragging rights for being the older campgrounds on hwy 30" and "Security cameras everywhere," more recent and positive reviews emphasize the peaceful nature, beautiful landscaping, and the dedication of the owners, suggesting the primary "amenity" is the quiet, well-kept environment itself. The security cameras could be interpreted as a feature for safety and peace of mind, though some may view them differently.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a privately owned "ma & pa" facility, Shady Oaks RV Campground's focus tends to be on providing consistent value rather than large-scale promotions. However, their commitment to creating a welcoming atmosphere for long-term stays can be seen as a de facto "special offer" for those needing an extended home base in the Marshalltown area.

  • Competitive Pricing: While not explicitly stated as a promotion, their rates (e.g., a reported $22-$26 nightly rate in older reviews, and more recent mentions of $35-$50) are generally competitive for full-hookup RV sites in the region. For long-term guests, weekly or monthly rates might offer significant savings compared to nightly stays.
  • Long-Term Stay Friendliness: The campground's suitability and welcoming nature for long-term work-related stays is a significant benefit for professionals or snowbirds looking for an extended residence.

This is not a regular campground. Mainly workers and people that have relatives close by. There are no showers, no shelter in case of bad weather, Wi-Fi is offered, it just doesn’t work. No laundry. Pricing for a month is very good however amenities are none! If you have to leave early due to necessity there is NO refund. Weekly rate is very high. You get what you pay for with no refunds!

This little campground off of the Lincoln highway is a real slice of Americana. Judy was waiting for us when we pulled in and was very friendly and gave us the lay of the land.nice gravel pads and grass. There is a big fire pit for a fire. Full hookup and Wi-Fi and we also had cell phone reception. This is the cutest place.
