Introduction / Overview
For eligible New Yorkers looking for a peaceful and wonderfully packed outdoor escape, the West Point FMWR Round Pond Outdoor Recreation Area offers a breathtaking retreat nestled in the stunning Hudson Valley landscape. This site, part of the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) facilities at the United States Military Academy at West Point, is a cherished destination, primarily serving active duty military, veterans, and their families. It's a place where the beauty of the Hudson Highlands truly shines, offering a serene, nature-filled getaway that feels miles away from the city's hustle, yet is comfortably accessible. The campground is well-known for its respectful, clean, and incredibly welcoming atmosphere—a true “home away from home” for those who have served and their loved ones.
Visitors consistently praise the wonderfully peace-filled environment and the wide array of options for fun on-site. The area is centered around a picturesque, trout-stocked mountain lake, providing a magnificent natural focal point for relaxation and activity. From the clear rules provided in the welcome pack to the genuinely helpful and accommodating staff, the entire experience is designed to be pleasant and stress-free, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable stay. Location and Accessibility
The Round Pond Outdoor Recreation Area is located at 1348 Round Pond Rd, West Point, NY 10996, USA. It is situated just a short drive from the main West Point campus, placing it conveniently near the charming small towns of Highland Falls and Cold Spring. Its location in the Hudson Highlands means it is within a comfortable and scenic driving distance of the greater New York City area, making it an excellent choice for a spontaneous camping trip or a planned longer stay without requiring an excessively long journey. The surrounding area is famous for its rocky, wooded terrain, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty and historical proximity.
While the accessibility from a regional perspective is excellent, prospective visitors should be aware of the local access road. One customer review noted that the road in and out can be narrow, steep, and winding, with an "S curl again and again," which may pose a challenge, particularly for “big rigs” (large RVs or travel trailers). It is situated 1 mile west on Route 293 from Route 9W. Navigating this path requires caution, but the reward is a tranquil, secluded spot. For those eligible, the location is ideal, offering quick access to the West Point Military Academy Museum (about 15 minutes away), the extensive shopping at Woodbury Commons (approximately 20 minutes away), and various local hiking trails, including the Mine Hill, Sackett & Compartment Loop trails in nearby Cornwall. The option to take a train ride into New York City from a nearby station further enhances its appeal as a basecamp for exploring both the natural and metropolitan sides of New York.

What a perfect stop for us on our New England road trip! This area is beautiful! We loved the site we had-#C1. The day we left we rented the pedal boat for $4. Lovely walk around the campground!
Sep 17, 2025 · Michelle RigbyWow, breathtakingly peace filled and wonderfully packed with options for fun on site. The rules are very clear and provided in the welcome pack. This was my first experience here and am very pleased. Definitely returning. I’m not certain how big rigs get up the winding road in or out. In my six speed Jeep Wrangler dropped the gear down to crawl up and around and S curl again and again. God bless anyone with a big rig who can navigate the path. Took a few pictures to give ya the vibe. I’m so happy I found this place and am able to use stay. And, really nice helpful staff on the phone. Very accommodating to my arrival change. Side note, I’m a native NYer. Grew up in the area. The beauty never ceases to amaze me. As a veteran found this location and am so happy. My sis lives in Highland Falls, so it’s close by and it was nice inviting her for a walk and breakfast. Even if you’re from NY, definitely visit. You won’t be disappointed. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💯
Jun 26, 2023 · Ask Miss PatienceThis Famcamp is just off base. It is busy around the football games. The road in is tight in some spots be conscious of the time arriving. Our site was partially shaded and level. A nice view of the pond. Facilities are clean. Good washers and dryers. We were close to the dump station and laundry and the aromas that come with that. The range is near by and you can hear training from time to time. There is an archery range on site as well. Gas and Commissary prices are better on base. If you can catch a game you should. This is one of the most beautiful bases that is steeped in history. A great fall foliage stop.
Mar 07, 2022 · Golden Hour TravelersAway from everything and in the woods around the lake. We have tmobile and only a few spots had connectivity. Spot 17 is really good. There is only one shower and restroom bldg and can be a far walk for spots on other side of lake. Only water and electric hook ups for RV spots with 1 dump station near the showers. The laundry is adjacent to showers and is pay $1.75. There are boats to rent and a swimming area. Places to hike as well. Very quiet. Some sites require leveling. There is a small store on site and a manned office. A care taker is on site 24 hrs. RV Sites ring around the lake and some are up high on the hill. Military ID is required for access. Great place for under $30 a night.
Aug 24, 2022 · ronald hinkleGreat place to camp at super cheap prices. I paid 24$ for my tent campsite. The site had a fire ring, grill, and picnic table setup for use. The campground is very clean and has everything you could need for a few days of good camping. There is a lake at the campground with all sorts of toys for rent at very cheap pricing.
