West Shore Campground - Indian Lake State Park About
For Michigan locals seeking an authentic and understated camping experience in the heart of the Upper Peninsula, West Shore Campground, part of Indian Lake State Park in Manistique, MI, offers a unique charm. This "semi-modern" campground provides a more rustic escape compared to its modern counterpart within the state park, appealing to those who appreciate simplicity and a deeper connection with nature. It’s a place where the sounds of the forest and the tranquility of Indian Lake take precedence over extensive modern conveniences.
Reviewers consistently highlight the peaceful atmosphere, describing it as "out of the way, not busy, quiet, wooded area." This makes it an ideal spot for unwinding and enjoying the natural surroundings. While it offers 20-amp electric service and potable water, visitors should be aware that restrooms are outhouses (vault toilets), and cellular service can be limited. However, what it might lack in high-tech amenities, it more than makes up for in genuine hospitality. The campground host is frequently praised as a "great guy, very helpful," ensuring that even with fewer facilities, campers feel supported and welcome. For those who prioritize a quiet, natural setting and are prepared for a more traditional camping experience, West Shore Campground promises a refreshing Michigan UP getaway. It’s also known for being a great spot for fishing, suggesting that anglers will find plenty to appreciate here.
West Shore Campground is nestled within Indian Lake State Park at Co Rd 455, Manistique, MI 49854, USA. This location is a significant advantage for Michigan residents, placing them directly in the vibrant heart of the Upper Peninsula's natural beauty. Indian Lake is the fourth-largest inland lake in the UP, renowned for its diverse fishing opportunities and expansive waters.
While the campground itself is described as "out of the way" and in a "wooded area," suggesting a sense of seclusion, it remains reasonably accessible. It's located about 4 miles northwest of the main Indian Lake State Park south unit on County Road 455. Manistique, a full-service city, is just a short drive away, providing convenient access to groceries, supplies, and other amenities that campers might need during their stay. This balance allows for a peaceful, immersive camping experience without feeling entirely disconnected from civilization.
The access to Indian Lake, though potentially a "long walk or drive to the lake picnic area" from some campsites, still positions campers excellently for water-based activities. The lake is known for fishing, offering species like perch, walleye, northern pike, muskellunge, rock bass, smallmouth bass, bluegill, sturgeon, and brown trout. Additionally, the broader Indian Lake State Park area features a swimming beach, boat launches, and hiking trails, making the West Shore Campground a strategic base for exploring the diverse recreational offerings of this beloved Michigan state park. Its location makes it a true UP gem for locals seeking an authentic outdoor adventure.

As a component of a Michigan State Park, West Shore Campground at Indian Lake State Park operates under the standard fee structure set by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR). This typically means that specific, recurring "promotions" or "special offers" in the commercial sense are not a standard feature. Instead, the value lies in the affordable access to state park facilities and the natural resources they protect.
Camping fees at Michigan State Parks are generally standardized and require a Recreation Passport for vehicle entry. Any applicable discounts, such as those for Michigan residents or seniors, would fall under the broader state park system policies. Given its semi-modern, rather than modern, classification, the per-night fees for campsites at West Shore Campground are typically more economical than those at full-service modern campgrounds. This inherent affordability can be seen as a continuous "offer" for budget-conscious campers.
For the most accurate and current information on camping rates, Recreation Passport requirements, and any potential off-season or long-term stay discounts, it is always best for prospective campers to visit the official Michigan DNR website for Indian Lake State Park or use the MiDNRReservations.com portal. While reservations are accepted for some sites at Indian Lake State Park, the West Shore unit, with its semi-modern classification, is sometimes available on a first-come, first-served basis, offering flexibility for spontaneous trips (though checking in advance is always recommended).

Customer Reviews
Great weekend. I should have bought a fishing license. Camp staff were great.
Out of the way, not busy, quiet, wooded area. Campground host is a great guy, very helpful. It has only 20 amp service, place to fill water. Outhouse restrooms. Poor cellular service, if any. No amenities. Long walk or drive to the lake picnic area.
This campground is so peaceful and quiet. This is a first-come-first-serve basis. There are 72 and I think only about five were being used and we stayed there for a weekend. Outhouses are clean and lit at night. No swimming. Small boat launch. 20 amp breakers. Requires state park pass or daily pass. 11 pm quiet time. No showers.
Very nice camp. The host, Mike is a good guy! Kept everything in order and nice and neat. Even the bathrooms were smelling good LoL! That's a spot to return to again for sure!
Loop 25-36 was peaceful and not another soul around. 10 out of 10 would recommend
