Introduction / Overview
For New York State locals,
Wonderland Forest
in Lafayette, NY, presents itself as an ambitious and unique destination, designed to merge the beauty of Central New York's natural landscape with the energy of live music and community gatherings. Located in the picturesque Apple Valley, this sprawling 400-acre property offers a retreat into lush forests, scenic views, and boasts unique geographical features like the historic Rattlesnake Gulf and The Blue Hole.Opened in 2021,
Wonderland Forest
has quickly positioned itself not just as a campground, but as a multifunctional event venue, primarily focused on hosting music festivals and large gatherings. It offers what is described as primitive camping and RV sites, encouraging guests to immerse themselves in the surrounding nature. However, it is crucial for local users to understand its dual nature. While the property is expansive and beautiful—featuring plenty of flat ground, wonderful tree lines, and ample space—the camping experience is often closely tied to the large-scale events it hosts. As noted in public feedback, non-festival weekend camping may be fundamentally different from the organized event experience, sometimes utilizing basic, overflow parking areas. Visitors are encouraged to inquire specifically about the exact type of camping available for their dates, particularly for non-festival stays, to align expectations with the highly promoted natural surroundings.Location and Accessibility
Wonderland Forest
is situated at4812 S Cook Rd, Lafayette, NY 13084, USA
, placing it centrally in the state and within convenient driving distance for a vast number of New York residents. Its location in the rolling hills of Madison and Onondaga Counties is not only scenic but also highly accessible via major Central New York roadways. For locals in the Syracuse metropolitan area and beyond, the venue is particularly notable for its close proximity to the renowned Beak and Skiff Apple Orchards. This makes it an ideal spot for those attending events at Beak and Skiff or simply looking to explore the area's agricultural and recreational tourism. The proximity to Syracuse ensures that while guests enjoy a rustic, nature-focused experience, they are never far from city amenities, hospitals, and major transportation hubs. The convenience to Syracuse is a significant advantage for concert-goers and weekend campers alike. However, due to the rural nature of the area and the scale of the property, guests should be aware that the site has received feedback regarding internal accessibility challenges, particularly for mobility-impaired guests who may find the distances between the parking, camping areas, and venue grounds challenging without management-provided shuttle assistance.

Wonderland Forest
is suitable for New York locals, particularly those who are self-sufficient campers, concert enthusiasts, and nature lovers seeking an accessible weekend getaway in the Central New York region. It offers an escape into the beautiful Apple Valley without the need for an extensive drive, making it a perfect quick-trip destination from Syracuse and surrounding towns. The primary attraction for locals is the unique blend of a spectacular, sprawling natural environment with a dynamic concert venue. However, transparency is key. Locals should note the operational distinctions between a festival weekend and a standard camping weekend, as amenities like fire rings, picnic tables, and dedicated campsites are sometimes reserved for events, and non-festival camping may revert to a more basic "park and camp" model in large fields. Furthermore, potential visitors with mobility challenges should contact the venue in advance to discuss the best way to navigate the large property, as shuttle services and ADA compliance have been areas of noted difficulty in public feedback.
Ultimately, for the informed New York camper who appreciates a rustic, primitive setup, the extensive hiking trails, and the possibility of adding a show at a nearby venue like Beak and Skiff,
Wonderland Forest
offers a distinctive, convenient, and memorable outdoor experience.4812 S Cook Rd, Lafayette, NY 13084, USA
Stay here for two nights to attend a few shows at nearby beak and skiff. It was a big disappointment. Essentially you pay $70 per night to sleep in their lush grass parking lot. In no way did it resemble camping: no fire ring, no picnic table, no nothing. The camp has camp sites to be sure, and their beautiful, but they only allow their use for onsite festivals. To be honest, it felt a lot like a tourist trap, highway robbery scenario. The staff was nice, though disorganized. I do not think they really know what they are doing and they are certainly out of line for their treatment of campers on non-festival weekend. I would not return, and I would not camp their for a festival without first visiting the camp during a festival just to see how it functions. (photo shows you their "camp site." there instructions were simply park and camp anywhere on the edge of our parking lot.)
Jul 02, 2024 · Patrick BurnsTried to go for Dark Hollow. I am handicapped and need wheelchair access. Don't bother to go if you're disabled. There are no ADA and they absolutely do not care about it. The parking lot where they tried to park me in was way to far away for me and my wheelchair. They offered no help at all. They actually made it more difficult by just watching my struggle. They literally stood there and watched. Offering no help. No shuttle services. Nothing. The price online was $20, but when you get there they want more and say they have "online fees" and wanted to charge me $33 instead. That is over 50% more and I didn't purchase online. When I refused I was offered a price of $25 instead. Shady stuff going on there! Show times were listed online, but those weren't actually the times either. My husband and I seemed to be the only patrons there at 5. Showtime. Long story short horrible ADA and being asked for more than it said online and us seeming to be the only folks there. We left.
Sep 07, 2024 · Sharon PetersThoroughly enjoyed this place. It is run very well some of the best music around just a nice place to go.
Sep 29, 2024 · david wallaceProvided sound to the grounds on June 21-22nd. i have been trying to collect my payment from Dan for 6+ months now. they have been just ignoring my invoices and email. i gave them 50% off too. last time ill give a deal to anyone without payment up front. also will not be recommending any business to their venue either. over a measly $500 too. what a joke
Dec 19, 2024 · Soundz OrganicThe music was great. The venue could use some management, portajohns covered in human waste dried on from last weekend. The tank has been emptied but the seat, floors and walls were disgusting. Folks were going behind rather than inside because of the filth. Expensive tickets, expensive parking and outrageous camping fees and add ons. most of the venue is not open to the public. The nature walk we heard about is not accessible. And just one food vendor with just one menu item. It's a bummer to finally have a venue with potential in the area, and see it mis managed to the point where attendees are talking about the mess at the show. Hopefully they can do better or it probably won't last long.
