This popular Iowa DNR park provides a blend of natural beauty, recreational activities, and convenient amenities, making it a go-to destination for those looking to enjoy everything from a peaceful lakeside retreat to an active adventure in the heart of the state. It’s a place where families can create lasting memories, and individuals can reconnect with nature, all within a reasonable drive for most Iowa residents.
Rock Creek State Park is renowned as a premier camping destination in central Iowa, particularly celebrated for its large man-made lake and extensive surrounding natural areas. Unlike some more rustic options, Rock Creek Campground boasts a mix of modern and traditional camping facilities, aiming to cater to a broad spectrum of preferences, from RVers seeking electrical hookups to tent campers desiring a more secluded spot. While recent reviews have brought up concerns regarding environmental issues and staff responsiveness, it's important to understand the broader offerings and official information from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to gain a comprehensive picture of what this state park campground provides.
This article will delve into the location and accessibility of Rock Creek Campground, detail the services and features it offers, discuss pricing, and conclude by highlighting why, despite any reported issues, it remains a significant and potentially suitable outdoor destination for locals across Iowa looking for a blend of comfort and natural immersion.
Rock Creek Campground is situated at 5451 Rock Creek W St, Kellogg, IA 50135, USA, placing it firmly within Rock Creek State Park. This extensive park covers approximately 4,500 acres, centered around the 602-acre Rock Creek Lake, the third-largest state-operated artificial impoundment in Iowa. The park is located in Jasper County, just outside the small town of Kellogg, and seven miles east of Grinnell.
The accessibility of Rock Creek Campground is a significant advantage for Iowa residents. It's conveniently located roughly nine miles from Interstate 80 (Exit 173 for Kellogg), a major east-west artery across the state. This makes it easily reachable from metropolitan areas like Des Moines (approximately an hour's drive west) and Cedar Rapids/Iowa City (roughly an hour to an hour and a half drive east), as well as other parts of central Iowa. Clear signage guides visitors from the highway to the park and campground.
Within the park, the campground is primarily located along the roads on the east and west sides of the north arm of the lake. This placement offers many campsites with beautiful views of Rock Creek Lake, with some even sitting directly on the water's edge. The park's well-maintained multi-use trails are also readily accessible from various points, promoting easy exploration. While concerns about environmental conditions and flies have been raised in recent reviews, the vastness of the park and its various access points generally contribute to a feeling of being immersed in nature, yet still conveniently connected to nearby towns for supplies in Kellogg or Grinnell.
As a well-established Iowa State Park campground, Rock Creek offers a comprehensive range of services designed for comfort and convenience, though it's important for campers to be aware of the operational season for some amenities:
- Campsite Variety: The campground boasts nearly 200 campsites, including both electric (101 sites with 20/30/50 amp hookups) and non-electric options. Many sites are reservable, with 100% of campsites requiring a reservation from April 1 to November 15.
- Modern Restroom and Shower Building: A key amenity, the campground features modern restrooms with flush toilets and hot showers. These facilities are generally open from April through October.
- Dump Station: A sanitary dump station is available for RVs and trailers, conveniently located near the entrance.
- Potable Water Access: Water hydrants are dispersed throughout the campground for filling water tanks or containers, though individual water hookups at sites are not universally available.
- Park Concessionaire/Marina: Located within the park (often by the lake), a concession offers essential services from roughly April 15 through October 15. Services include boat rentals (pontoons, fishing boats, canoes, kayaks, pedal boats), live bait and tackle, ice, firewood, fishing licenses, camping accessories, and snacks.
- Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for outdoor dining and campfires. Firewood is available for purchase at the concession stand.
- Accessibility: Universally accessible fishing piers and boat ramps are available within the park.
- Pet-Friendly: Pets are permitted in the campground and on trails, provided they are leashed and pet waste is properly managed.
- Playground: A playground is located within the campground area, providing recreation for children.
- Shelter Rentals: Open picnic shelters are available, with one reservable online and others available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Rock Creek Campground and State Park are rich with features and highlights that draw visitors from across Iowa:
- Rock Creek Lake: The centerpiece of the park, this 602-acre lake is highly popular for various water activities. It allows any size boat motor (with a 5 mph speed limit), offering opportunities for boating, paddling, and fishing.
- Excellent Fishing: The lake is well-stocked with crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, and channel catfish, providing fantastic fishing opportunities from 15 miles of shoreline, artificial jetties, or an accessible fishing pier. Ice fishing is popular in winter.
- Extensive Multi-Use Trails: Over 8 miles of non-paved multi-use trails wind around the lake, suitable for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and in winter, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. A 5-mile paved biking trail also connects to the town of Grinnell.
- Wildlife Viewing and Birdwatching: The park is a haven for diverse wildlife and is an excellent spot for birdwatching, especially during spring and fall migrations when thousands of ducks take refuge.
- Diverse Campsite Settings: Campers can choose from sites on the water's edge with beautiful lake views or more secluded spots nestled in wooded areas, catering to different preferences.
- Proximity to Iowa Speedway: Located just 5 miles from the Iowa Speedway, the park is an ideal camping base for racing enthusiasts attending events.
- Year-Round Activities: While camping facilities are seasonal, the broader state park offers activities throughout the year, including hunting in designated wildlife management areas during appropriate seasons.
- Park Concessions: The on-site concession stand provides convenient access to essentials, boat rentals, and fishing supplies, enhancing the overall visitor experience.
As a state-operated campground managed by the Iowa DNR, Rock Creek Campground primarily offers value through its standard, competitive state park rates rather than frequent commercial promotions. However, there are inherent "offers" that benefit Iowa residents:
- Iowa Recreation Passport: For Iowa residents, purchasing an annual Recreation Passport provides unlimited access to all Iowa State Parks and recreation areas for a single fee, offering significant savings for frequent visitors.
- Affordable Daily Rates: Camping fees are structured to be accessible. Rates for electric sites are around $23-$25 per night, and non-electric/primitive sites are around $12-$15 per night (off-season rates can be lower). These rates are competitive for the amenities and recreational access provided.
- Online Reservation System: The ability to reserve 100% of the campsites online via MiDNRReservations.com (or ReserveAmerica) up to three months in advance provides a significant convenience, allowing campers to plan their trips with certainty, especially during peak season.
- Extended Stay Options: While there might be limits on consecutive nights, the park generally allows for stays that can accommodate longer vacations, rather than just overnight stops.
For the most precise and current pricing, reservation details, and any specific alerts (such as those that might address environmental concerns or facility closures), it is always best to consult the official Iowa DNR website for Rock Creek State Park or utilize their online reservation system.

Customer Reviews
I camp here a lot the only problem I have is I own 6 dogs and they all love to park at everything. So that drives me nuts but I keep coming back
I wish I could give 0 stars. The sheer amount of flies that this campsite has is a massive environmental disaster waiting to happen. I would guess that the local hospitals have taken people in with issues caused by the huge population of disease carrying flies at this campground. The fact that so many people actually camp here is astounding. I stayed for only 3 hours and moved into another campground 10 miles away and there's no flies there. Seek the alternative if you don't wish to become ill. The county doesn't care as I did contact them and even the sole employee I was able to contact at this campground became defensive and uppity after I brought up the issue. It is highly likely that fecal matter is seeping into the ground from their pit toilets and tainting the lake. I would not fish here if you're looking to consume what you catch. There are 2 alternative campgrounds nearby and I cannot stress enough that out should seek these alternatives if you value your health, or the health of your family and pets that you plan to bring along. This campground is not currently suitable for human occupation.
