Sioux Portage Group Campground is located at Danbury, WI 54830, USA. This placement in northwestern Wisconsin, specifically in Burnett County, positions it within the vast expanse of the state's picturesque Northwoods. Its proximity to the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway (formed by the St. Croix and Namekagon Rivers) means it's nestled in an area celebrated for its natural beauty, abundant forests, and significant waterways.
Accessing the campground by road is generally straightforward, though as a state forest campground, it may involve navigating smaller county roads once off the main highways. A customer review mentions that "the campsite needs better sign, as it can be confusing where to enter the campground." This suggests that while navigable, visitors should pay close attention to signage upon approach, perhaps even consulting a detailed map or GPS beforehand to ensure a smooth arrival. Being aware of this potential signage issue in advance can alleviate any confusion.
The campground has undergone significant "upgrades that allow for RVs and trailers while still being a great tent camping site." This indicates improved infrastructure compared to its past as a strictly tent-only camp. While specific details on the exact number or type of RV hookups aren't provided, the allowance for RVs and trailers suggests that the access roads and individual sites are designed to accommodate these larger vehicles. This enhanced accessibility makes it suitable for a wider range of groups, from those preferring rustic tent camping to those requiring the amenities of an RV.
For visitors with mobility considerations, state forest campgrounds typically aim to provide some level of basic accessibility, although detailed information would need to be confirmed with the WI DNR directly. Given that it's a group campground, the sites are described as "nice and wide," which could offer more space for maneuvering or setting up accessible equipment. The primary focus of such rustic campgrounds, however, is often on natural terrain.
The location near the Namekagon River, part of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, suggests that while the campground itself might not have a direct, designated swimming area, river access for other activities like canoeing or kayaking is a possibility, though campers should confirm specific access points and regulations. The area's natural setting also implies proximity to trails and other outdoor recreational opportunities within the state forest, ideal for group activities.
As Sioux Portage Group Campground is a Wisconsin State Forest Group Camp managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WI DNR), "promotions" are generally structured around the state's vehicle admission stickers and specific group camping policies, rather than traditional commercial discounts. These are designed to provide consistent pricing and access for all visitors.
It is important to directly consult the official Wisconsin DNR website (

While basic, the amenities provided, such as water access, fire rings, and spacious sites, facilitate a comfortable and enjoyable rustic camping experience. It provides a unique, dedicated space for groups to bond, explore, and create lasting memories amidst the tranquil beauty of our state forests. For any local planning a substantial group camping trip, Sioux Portage offers the ideal blend of rustic charm, necessary amenities, and the invaluable opportunity to experience the best of Wisconsin's outdoors together.
I've been camping at the awesome Sioux Portage Group Camp since 1984 when it was tent-only camping, you had to pump water up using an ancient, manual pump jack from a very deep well, and Dan was still The Main Man and All Around Great Guy at the Grantsburg Ranger Station. Now, 40 years later, Sioux Portage is still an awesome state forest group camp with upgrades that allow for RVs and trailers while still being a great tent camping site. I hope to God that Dan retired healthy, happy, and wise in the knowledge that he kept hundreds, maybe thousands of campers and scouts feel happy, safe, and cared for like his own family. (I miss him.) Btw, the water that came from that old well was icy cold and wonderful, but nobody in their right mind volunteered to draw it more than once if they didn't have to.
Aug 11, 2024 · Bosco RobinsonThe site was nice and wide. They should consider adding a swimming area by the river. They need to add an area to shower! The campsite needs better sign, as it can be confusing where to enter the campground.
