Are you a Tennessee local with a passion for outdoor adventure, particularly off-roading, and seeking a campground that understands your unique needs? Winona / New River KOA Journey in Huntsville, TN, aims to be your perfect base camp. As a newer addition to the KOA family, this campground offers a fresh perspective on camping in the beautiful New River area, particularly for those who love to explore on four wheels.
Located in Scott County, a region renowned for its vast trail systems and rugged beauty, Winona / New River KOA Journey is positioning itself as a go-to spot for ATV and off-road enthusiasts. While still in its early stages of development and operation, the campground is striving to provide a clean and functional environment for its guests. Imagine having a comfortable spot to rest after a day of exhilarating rides, surrounded by the natural landscapes that make Tennessee so special for outdoor recreation.
It's important to approach this campground with an understanding of its niche and current stage. While it bears the KOA name, a recognized standard in camping, some early visitors have noted aspects that highlight its newness and specific focus. For those expecting a traditional, fully developed KOA with extensive amenities spread uniformly across the property, there might be a period of adjustment as the campground continues to evolve. However, for those primarily seeking a well-located site with essential hookups and direct access to their off-road passion, this KOA offers significant potential.
One reviewer, visiting in August 2024, lauded the campground as "brand new" and "very clean," particularly impressed with the "wow" factor of the bathrooms. This indicates a commitment to cleanliness and modern facilities in the newer sections. While the drive to the campground can be "a little challenge" due to narrow, curved roads, this is often part of the charm of accessing secluded natural areas in Tennessee. For locals, navigating these roads is often part of the adventure of reaching prime outdoor spots.
In the following sections, we'll delve deeper into the unique aspects of Winona / New River KOA Journey, including its promising features, services, and why it's a suitable option for Tennessee locals who prioritize off-road access and a clean, comfortable place to stay amidst their adventures.
Winona / New River KOA Journey is situated at 5760 River Rd, Huntsville, TN 37756, USA. This address places it squarely in Scott County, a region of East Tennessee that serves as a prime gateway to some of the state's most extensive and popular off-road trail systems, including those around the New River area.
The campground's location on River Road suggests a direct connection to the scenic beauty and recreational opportunities associated with the New River, a significant feature for outdoor enthusiasts. Huntsville itself is a rural community, offering a peaceful and natural setting that is ideal for escaping urban congestion and immersing oneself in the rugged charm of the Cumberland Mountains.
A key aspect of this KOA's accessibility, as highlighted by a reviewer, is the approach road. The drive to the campground involves navigating approximately "3 miles off main road" on a path that is "very narrow and windy." While this might be a "little challenge" for some, requiring drivers of larger vehicles to "take shoulder a few times when larger vehicles passed by," it is often characteristic of roads leading to secluded natural areas and prime outdoor recreation spots in Tennessee. For experienced RVers and locals accustomed to mountain roads, this is simply part of the journey to a more adventurous destination.
The campground’s facilities are described as being somewhat spread out. What might be considered the "older" campground (with electric and water only, no sewer) is physically separate from the "newer" full hookup sites. The office itself is located off the main full hookup section, requiring campers to "drive back down the road, turn left, pass a church, cross over a railroad track and it's there." This indicates that the campground is expansive and covers different parcels of land, which is not uncommon for properties in vast natural settings. While it means some driving between areas, it also suggests ample space.
Despite these navigational nuances, the location is strategically chosen for its proximity to vast trail systems, making it highly attractive to off-road enthusiasts. The New River area offers significant opportunities for ATV riding, hiking, and enjoying the natural environment. This blend of natural beauty and access to specialized recreation makes Winona / New River KOA Journey a uniquely positioned campground for those seeking adventure in East Tennessee.
Winona / New River KOA Journey, as a developing campground, aims to provide essential services with a focus on convenience for its primary audience – off-road enthusiasts and campers seeking a tranquil base. Based on visitor feedback, here's what is offered:
It's important to note that the extent and accessibility of some amenities are still evolving, and guests with full hookups might be encouraged to utilize their own facilities. The emphasis appears to be on providing fundamental RV site services, with communal amenities in designated areas.
Winona / New River KOA Journey offers several key features and highlights that distinguish it, particularly for its target audience of off-road adventurers and those seeking a quieter, more natural camping experience in Tennessee.
These highlights suggest that Winona / New River KOA Journey, while still maturing, offers significant advantages for those seeking a modern, clean, and well-located base for their Tennessee outdoor adventures, especially if off-roading is on the agenda.
As a relatively "brand new KOA," specific, publicly advertised promotions or special offers for Winona / New River KOA Journey are not detailed in the provided information. KOA campgrounds typically have a standardized pricing structure, often offering discounts through their KOA Rewards loyalty program. However, as a new and evolving location, they may have specific local or seasonal incentives that are not widely publicized.

For Tennessee locals, Winona / New River KOA Journey in Huntsville offers a compelling and increasingly suitable option, particularly for those with specific outdoor interests and a flexible approach to campground experiences. Despite some initial teething issues common with new developments, its unique positioning makes it a strong contender for local adventurers.
Firstly, and most significantly, its strategic location in Scott County provides unparalleled access to some of Tennessee's premier ATV and off-road trail systems. For the substantial local community of four-wheeling enthusiasts, having a KOA campground as a direct base near Brimstone and Windrock is a major advantage. This means less time trailering and more time riding, making it an ideal hub for weekend warrior trips or extended off-road expeditions right here in Tennessee.
Secondly, as a "brand new KOA," the campground is in a state of development and refinement. While this means some aspects are still evolving, it also promises modern and well-maintained facilities in the newer sections, including "very clean" bathrooms that have already impressed visitors. For locals who value cleanliness and modern hookups, these newer amenities are a significant draw, offering comfort after a day of rugged adventure. As the campground matures, the overall experience is likely to become even more streamlined.
Thirdly, the tranquil natural setting, despite its connection to adventurous activities, appeals to those seeking a peaceful retreat. Being nestled along River Road in the New River area provides a genuine escape from urban noise, allowing campers to unwind and enjoy the serene beauty of the Cumberland Mountains. This blend of accessibility to high-energy recreation and a quiet place to relax is a powerful combination for Tennessee residents.
Finally, while the approach roads might be "narrow and windy," this is a familiar characteristic of accessing many prime natural and recreational spots in Tennessee. For locals accustomed to navigating such routes to reach hidden gems, this minor challenge is simply part of the adventure, leading to rewarding experiences in a less crowded, more authentic environment. This makes Winona / New River KOA Journey a suitable choice for those who are willing to navigate a little to find their ideal outdoor haven.
In summary, Winona / New River KOA Journey is an evolving but promising destination for Tennessee locals. It caters directly to off-road enthusiasts with its prime location, offers modern and clean facilities in its newer sections, and provides a peaceful natural backdrop for relaxation. It’s a compelling option for those seeking adventure and a comfortable base camp in the heart of the Volunteer State's wild beauty.

We've never actually left a campground before. This was the first. I feel bad about giving it a low star, but I feel they have a far way to go before being called a KOA. When we arrived, we saw a brand new large office which was closed and looked like never was used. There was a # on window to call when checking in. We called it. Lady said she had an emergency. To the left of us, was the "older" campground that had just electric, water/no sewer. We couldn't figure out where the 'newer' campground was. We had full hook up. The lady on the phone explained to us to go back where we came and turn left. So, it's not just left from the office; it's drive back down the road, turn left, pass a church, cross over a railroad track and its there. It's not even on the same property as the office. The $90+ a night site was a field of overgrown grass, very little gravel and looks like sat a few 'partiers' campers with 20 chairs in a circle. Someone else was using the water from our site. No amenities what so ever. If you wanted to use the restroom, you would need to get back in your car and drive up the street to where the office was. And then they only had one restroom for the entire campground stating well if you have full hook up you don't need to use their bathroom. Their playground didn't even sit near the camp sites. It was down the hill in back of the office near a railroad track. (I'm hoping the railroad track isn't being used.) This campground is mainly for people wanting to 4 wheel and party. It shouldn't be a KOA. The lady even told me Oh yeah, the 4 wheelers love to party. It should be marketed as such. We did not feel save. Anyone expecting to stay in a KOA campground will be disappointed. They did give us our money back and that's why I gave them 2 stars vs 1 star. I am grateful for that. Also, the drive to this campground is 3 miles off main road and is very narrow and windy. We were thinking our gps was off, but no..its definitely out there.
Apr 01, 2024 · A RellokaThis is brand new KOA! Visited during Aug 2024, travel solo. Very clean place even you can see the pictures, bathroom, wow! Defiantly plan come back WITH my family. Only cons is to get there might be little challenge - roads is very curved (have to take shoulder few time when larger vehicles passed by)
Sep 07, 2024 · Nick AspidowAmazing campground. Folks I am not sure what the previous reviews were about. But please take reviews with the grain of salt, this location was every bit as nice and easy to get in and out of. This was the wife's first time ever staying in a travel trailer at a campground. I chose this KOA because it was close to our home. But the wife actually enjoyed it. It was NOT a busy weekend. It was quiet. Now, understand this is an OHV campground. And they are several camp grounds in the area. But this campground is surrounded by all kinds of OHV trails. I can't say anything negative about this location. The staff was accommodating. The camp site was terrific. It had FHUs. And forgive me, but the Earth is not flat, so don't expect the sites to ever be. But be prepared if you're going to camp and don't blame the KOA for it's unlevel parking spots. Rain. Wear and Tear. Vehicles coming and going. All these things take a toll on the ground. Thankfully, I came prepared with enough blocks to big a small shelter....but seriously, I brought enough blocks to have the stabilizers out properly. And the few people that was with us on the property were nice and quiet too. We didn't hear them much ... which is probably what they wanted from us too. Bathhouses were amazing!! Huge!! Clean!! SOFT TOILET PAPER. I can't poop in the RV .... sorry, I'm a big guy!!! Shower was great!! I can't say anything negative about this location. And I've been to some less superior locations, and this KOA, rates up there as if it was Holiday style!! I hope to camp again, during a busy weekend, just to see if the experience would be much different. Thank you Winona KOA and staff for making my wife's first trip a lot easier!!
