For those of us in Tennessee who have a passion for exhilarating off-road adventures and breathtaking natural scenery, East Tennessee offers some of the best riding opportunities in the nation. While many areas boast extensive trail systems, Brimstone Campground in Huntsville presents a unique blend of challenging terrain and stunning vistas, making it a noteworthy destination for ATV, UTV, and even motorcycle enthusiasts.
Brimstone Campground serves as a gateway to a vast network of trails, including easy access to the North Cumberland Unit TWRA (Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency) land, which offers over 200,000 acres of off-roading excitement. Beyond the trails, visitors consistently rave about the "SO BEAUTIFUL" views, "amazing" overlooks, and impressive rock formations that define the landscape. It's a place where the journey on the trails is matched by the visual spectacle surrounding you.
While a review notes some comparisons in convenience to other popular riding areas, the sheer beauty and access to an immense trail system set Brimstone apart. It's a destination for those who prioritize the quality of the ride and the majesty of the scenery, offering cabins for a comfortable stay after a day spent exploring the rugged terrain.
Location and Accessibility
Brimstone Campground is located at 4659 River Rd, Huntsville, TN 37756, USA. This address places it squarely in Scott County, Tennessee, a region renowned as a mecca for off-road vehicle enthusiasts due to its extensive trail systems and rugged, scenic terrain. The campground's location directly within or immediately adjacent to the vast Brimstone Recreation area makes it incredibly convenient for accessing thousands of acres of riding trails.
Accessibility to the trails from Brimstone is a significant highlight, with "easy access" to the North Cumberland Unit TWRA land. This connection opens up a massive expanse of over 200,000 acres for off-roading, including trails in the Ed Carter Unit, which some consider to offer "the best riding Tennessee has to offer!" This direct access is a major draw for visitors with ATVs, UTVs, and other off-road vehicles.
While it provides unparalleled trail access, one review notes that it's "not nearly as convenient as Windrock or Royal Blue when it comes to food, Ice, and gas." This implies that while the primary focus is on the riding experience, visitors should plan to bring their own supplies or be prepared for a drive to access full amenities. However, the trade-off is often a more immersive and less commercialized outdoor experience.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
For us Tennesseans who love to ride, Brimstone Campground in Huntsville offers an experience that is truly hard to match within our own state. If you’re an off-road enthusiast, the access to "over 200k acres of offroading trails," including the highly acclaimed Ed Carter Unit of TWRA land, is an incredible asset right in our backyard. While a previous review mentioned some minor conveniences lacking compared to other parks, the sheer scale and quality of the riding experience here are what truly matter to dedicated riders.
The "SO BEAUTIFUL" views, "amazing" overlooks, and unique "rock formations" are more than just scenery; they are part of the adventure. For locals who might make frequent trips, staying in one of the cabins offers a comfortable and convenient base, allowing you to maximize your time on the trails and truly immerse yourself in the natural grandeur of East Tennessee. It’s a place where you can unwind after a challenging day of riding, surrounded by the very beauty that drew you there.
Understanding the need for a TWRA permit (hunting license or high impact permit) is also a local advantage – it's a small administrative step that unlocks a massive amount of riding terrain, a secret weapon for those of us in the know. It provides access to what many consider the pinnacle of Tennessee's off-road opportunities.
Brimstone Campground isn't just a place to park your rig; it's a destination that fully embraces the spirit of East Tennessee's off-road culture. It’s an ideal choice for any local who wants to experience world-class riding, spectacular views, and a dedicated community of fellow enthusiasts, making it an essential addition to your Tennessee outdoor adventure itinerary.

As much as I love East Tennessee riding, Brimstone is probably my least favorite. It's not nearly as convenient as Windrock or Royal Blue when it comes to food, Ice, and gas. Don't get me wrong it's a fun place to ride, beautiful overlooks, and rock formations, but it's not my go to place to ride. You can access North Cumberland unit TWRA land quite easily from Brimstone, but you need a hunting license or high impact permit to access it. I do highly recommend getting the permit for TWRA as it covers over 200k acres of offroading trails. Ed Carter Unit having the best riding Tennessee has to offer! Hope this review helps! Have fun and be safe! Remember to always strap in or buckle up!
May 15, 2023 · Zach SmithWe didn't stay at the campground but stayed in one of the cabins however this place is SO BEAUTIFUL!!! The views are just amazing and I could never get tired of looking at all of it. We didn't want to leave!!
Apr 21, 2023 · Stephanie FitzmauriceI take my family to a different location for my birthday each year. Brimstone proceed to be one of the best; camping, cabins, trails, service we're all to notch! I recommend Brimstone to my Family, Friends & Fans!
Jun 08, 2023 · Austin BudreauNothing like camping in a parking lot… The primitive campground is basically the trailer parking lot. You will have no privacy and people will be coming to their trucks/trailers constantly on their ATVs. The cabin rentals don’t have adequate parking so everyone uses the primitive camping area. There is a cabin overflow parking but nothing is marked. Once one or two trucks parked here, everyone parked here. I don’t think I’ll come back here for primitive camping. They need to clearly mark the area and keep the trailers out of it! The place was clean, but charging for showers and Wi-Fi is a bit ridiculous given the quality of the camping. The photos are of the primitive camping area.
Jun 03, 2022 · Chad SchultzThis was ok however no housekeeping ie toilet paper refilled after complaining 3 days in a row. They charge for everything including showers. The polaris was stolen and dumped in the park.
