Our goal is to provide a clear, engaging, and informative overview of Forbes State Forest Motorized Site 6, helping you understand its specific characteristics and why it might be the ideal spot for your next Pennsylvania outdoor adventure. Visitors often describe their experience at Motorized Campsite #6 as one of peaceful seclusion, despite its motorized access. It's a place where you can truly unwind, with the sounds of nature as your primary backdrop. While some level of traffic, especially during hunting season, can be expected on nearby trails, the site itself offers a sense of being "nice and tucked away from the wind," providing a comfortable and private base for your wilderness endeavors. For those committed to regular communion with nature, as one dedicated camper exemplifies, sites like Motorized Site 6 offer invaluable mental and physical rejuvenation.

Location and Accessibility

Forbes State Forest Motorized Site 6 is strategically located within the expansive Forbes State Forest, specifically in the vicinity of Salisbury, PA 15558, USA. Its exact address points to the broader area, with the site itself being a designated spot within the forest. For Pennsylvanians, understanding this location means recognizing that you are entering a vast natural preserve, not a developed recreational park.

A significant highlight of its location is its proximity to Mount Davis, which, at 3,213 feet (979 m) above sea level, holds the distinction of being the highest point in Pennsylvania. This makes Motorized Site 6 an attractive base for those looking to explore this notable natural landmark, whether for a quick visit to the observation tower or a hike through the surrounding high-elevation forests. The site is noted to be "a few hundred yards off of Mt. Davis Road," indicating relatively easy vehicular access to the campsite itself, a key feature for a "motorized" site.

Accessibility to Forbes State Forest Motorized Site 6 implies driving directly to the site. This is crucial for transporting camping gear, as these sites are designed for vehicular access, allowing you to bring your supplies close to your tent or camping setup. While it's a motorized site, the experience is still rustic; you're not pulling into a paved RV park. Instead, you'll be on a forest road, leading to a relatively level camping area.

It's important for prospective campers to be aware that while the site offers seclusion, it's "on the side of a trail" and may experience some vehicular or pedestrian traffic, particularly "during hunting season." However, previous campers have noted that they "never felt invaded," suggesting that the level of activity is manageable and doesn't detract significantly from the wilderness experience. The mention of a "gated road next to the campsite" providing a "nice walk down to the field" indicates nearby opportunities for exploration directly from the site. This allows for immediate access to hiking and walking trails within the forest, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a more vigorous trek.

For Pennsylvanians, reaching this location involves navigating through scenic forest roads. It's advisable to have a reliable vehicle and possibly consult detailed maps or GPS for precise navigation within the state forest, as mobile phone service can be sporadic in remote areas. This location offers a true immersion into the wild, while still being accessible enough for a comfortable rustic camping trip.

Services Offered

It's crucial to set expectations regarding "services" at Forbes State Forest Motorized Site 6. As a primitive, motorized campsite within a state forest, it offers minimal, if any, traditional amenities often found at commercial campgrounds. The beauty and appeal of this site lie precisely in its rustic nature and the self-sufficiency it requires.

  • Designated Camping Area: The site provides a relatively level, designated area where you can set up your tent or camping equipment. This is a specific spot allocated for camping, not just an arbitrary pull-off.
  • Motorized Access: The term "Motorized Site" means you can drive your vehicle directly to or very near the campsite, making it easier to transport gear compared to hike-in primitive sites. This is a significant convenience for those who prefer not to backpack all their supplies.
  • Access to Forbes State Forest: Your "service" includes direct immersion in the vast Forbes State Forest, providing immediate access to hiking, wildlife viewing, and the natural environment. This is the primary amenity of the site.
  • Privacy and Seclusion: While not a tangible service, the inherent privacy and seclusion offered by a primitive forest campsite are a major draw. You are generally "tucked away from the wind" and removed from the crowds of more developed areas.
  • No Developed Facilities: It is imperative to understand that this site does NOT offer:
    • Restrooms or latrines (campers must practice Leave No Trace principles for human waste)
    • Potable water (you must bring all your own water or have a reliable filtration/purification method)
    • Picnic tables, fire rings, or grills (you must bring your own cooking setup, and any fire must be contained and permitted)
    • Electricity or hookups of any kind
    • Trash disposal (all trash must be packed out)
  • Permit Requirement: A free permit from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) is required to camp at Motorized Site 6. Obtaining this permit online or by contacting the Forbes State Forest office is a necessary "service" to ensure legal and responsible camping.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

For Pennsylvanians, Forbes State Forest Motorized Site 6 offers an unparalleled opportunity for a genuine wilderness escape right in their own state. Its suitability for locals stems from its unique blend of accessibility, true rustic immersion, and its appeal to those who value self-reliance and deep connection with nature, all without the cost or crowds of more developed sites.

Firstly, its location within Forbes State Forest, near the notable Mount Davis, provides an easily accessible yet profoundly wild setting. For many Pennsylvanians, this means a manageable drive to a truly secluded spot, allowing more time to be spent enjoying the outdoors rather than traveling. The proximity to Mount Davis itself offers a distinct highlight, inviting locals to explore the highest point in their state, adding a sense of accomplishment to their outdoor adventure.

The "motorized" aspect is a key convenience. While providing a primitive experience, the ability to drive directly to the campsite means locals don't need extensive backpacking gear to enjoy the solitude. This makes rustic camping more approachable for those who might not be seasoned backpackers but still crave a significant break from urban life. It's an ideal setting for a weekend reset, offering "mental health" benefits as noted by previous campers, where the peace and quiet of the forest can truly rejuvenate.

Furthermore, the very nature of this site – free camping with a simple permit – aligns perfectly with the ethos of many Pennsylvanians who appreciate value and responsible use of public lands. It’s an invitation to experience the state's natural beauty on your own terms, without the commercial distractions or fees associated with private campgrounds. This freedom allows for a more authentic and immersive engagement with the forest environment, from enjoying peaceful walks on nearby gated roads to simply relaxing amidst the trees.

While it requires self-sufficiency (no restrooms, no water, pack it in/pack it out), this very aspect appeals to locals who are prepared and prefer a less structured camping experience. It fosters a sense of preparedness and respect for nature, which are valuable qualities for any outdoor enthusiast. The potential for occasional trail traffic, especially during hunting season, is a minor consideration that many find manageable, as it rarely detracts from the overall sense of seclusion.

In conclusion, Forbes State Forest Motorized Site 6 is a prime choice for Pennsylvania residents seeking an affordable, accessible, and deeply immersive rustic camping experience. It offers a genuine connection to the state's wild landscapes, providing a tranquil and rejuvenating escape for those ready to embrace the quiet beauty of the Forbes State Forest.

I've camped in the Forbes State Forest several times this year and this time it was at Motorized Campsite #6. It's near Mt. Davis the highest point in PA. The site is a few hundred yards off of Mt. Davis road and is relatively level. I did have people drive up to the campsite twice while I was there. The gated road next to the campsite was a nice walk down to the field. Other than the rainy weather it was a great camping experience.

You're on the side of a trail and will likely have traffic and especially so during hunting season, but I never felt invaded. I was nice and tucked away from the wind. I've been to 6 total motorized campsites (4 in Forbes and 2 in Buchanan) and this one ranks #4. My jeep broke so I had to get a UHaul because I'm dedicated to monthly camping for mental health.

I wanted to take my new rooftop tent out to the woods for its first test. This site was very easy to find and very level. It was far enough off of the road to eliminate traffic noise. I did not find a water source nearby, but I didn't do a lot of exploring. It was the perfect spot for setting up for the night.
