Goodfellow AFB Recreation Camp is ideally situated at 1950 S Concho Dr, San Angelo, TX 76904, USA. This address places it directly on the shores of Lake Nasworthy, a prominent recreational lake in San Angelo, Texas. While associated with Goodfellow Air Force Base, it's crucial to note that the campground is "located off base," meaning visitors do not need to go through the main base gate for access. This off-base location simplifies arrival and departure for guests, as base access procedures do not apply directly to the campground itself.
San Angelo is a significant city in West Texas, well-connected by major U.S. Highways including 67, 87, and 277. The campground's location on South Concho Drive provides straightforward access from these main arteries, ensuring a relatively easy drive for RVs and trailers. Reviewers specifically mentioned the convenience of driving "across the bridge for fuel and amenities just a few minutes away," indicating that essential services like gas stations and local stores are readily accessible from the park without venturing far into the city center.
Despite its proximity to local conveniences, the campground itself is praised for being "very quiet at night," suggesting a good balance between accessibility and a peaceful environment. The presence of a "gate that closes at night" further enhances security and provides a sense of seclusion, allowing campers to enjoy the tranquility of Lake Nasworthy. While the main base's BX (Base Exchange) and commissary are "10 miles away," the immediate vicinity offers enough to cover daily needs, making the off-base location a definite advantage for a relaxed camping experience.
Goodfellow AFB Recreation Camp provides a range of services designed to make stays comfortable and convenient for its eligible guests. Based on customer reviews and public information, here are the key offerings:
- RV Sites with Full Hookups: The park offers "20 full hookups" that typically include 30/50 amp electrical service, water, and sewer connections. These sites are popular for their comprehensive utility access.
- RV Sites with Partial Hookups: In addition to full hookups, there are "10 partial" sites available, which generally include water and electric connections, but not sewer. These sites are described as "flat but not paved."
- Tent Sites: For traditional campers, tent sites are available, catering to a broader range of outdoor enthusiasts.
- Cabins: The recreation area also features cabins, providing an alternative lodging option for those who prefer not to bring their own RV or tent. Some cabins sleep 2-8 people.
- Laundry Facilities: There is a "laundry room" with "just 2 washers & 2 dryers." While noted by a reviewer as needing attention regarding smell, the availability of on-site laundry is a valuable convenience for campers.
- Restrooms and Showers: These facilities are available for guest use. However, a review explicitly mentioned that "the rest rooms and laundry. They smell really bad. Just 2 washers & 2 dryers. I’d stay here again especially because of cost (only $15 night for partial) but they really need to fix the restroom issue." This indicates a known area for improvement.
- Swimming Pool: The camp features a "swimming pool," offering a refreshing amenity, especially during warm Texas months.
- Playground: A "playground" is available, making the campground family-friendly for those with children.
- Water Access and Rentals: Located on Lake Nasworthy, the camp offers opportunities for boating and fishing. It also provides "boat rentals," including ski boats, pontoon boats, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards, allowing guests to fully enjoy the lake.
- Community Fire Ring: While individual campfires are prohibited, a community fire ring is available, fostering a communal atmosphere.
- Gated Entrance: The park has a "gate that closes at night," enhancing security for campers and their belongings.
- Friendly Staff: Multiple reviewers highlight that the "Staff is super nice" and "very friendly and helpful," contributing positively to the overall guest experience.
These services collectively provide a comprehensive camping experience, with the caveat that the restroom and laundry facilities may require some attention.
Goodfellow AFB Recreation Camp boasts several appealing features that make it a notable choice for eligible Texans seeking an outdoor retreat:
- Prime Lakeside Location on Lake Nasworthy: The campground's biggest highlight is its direct access to Lake Nasworthy. This offers beautiful "pretty park" views and ample opportunities for water-based activities like fishing, boating, and swimming. The availability of boat and watercraft rentals (kayaks, paddleboards, ski boats, pontoon boats) directly at the camp adds immense value, making it easy for guests to get out on the water.
- Affordable Pricing: A significant draw is the cost-effectiveness, with rates as low as "$15 night for partial" hookups and "$25/night" for full hookups. This affordability, especially for military-affiliated individuals, makes extended stays or frequent visits a more viable option compared to many other campgrounds.
- "Super Nice" and Friendly Staff: Consistently praised by reviewers, the "super nice" and helpful staff contribute significantly to a positive and welcoming atmosphere. This personal touch enhances the overall guest experience and fosters a sense of community.
- Quiet and Peaceful Environment: Despite being a recreation area, the camp is described as "very quiet at night." This tranquility allows campers to relax, unwind, and enjoy the natural surroundings without excessive noise disturbances, which is a major plus for a restful getaway.
- Variety of Site Options: With 20 full hookup sites, 10 partial hookup sites, and tent areas, the camp caters to a diverse range of camping preferences and equipment, accommodating different needs and budgets.
- Family-Friendly Amenities: The presence of a swimming pool and a playground makes it an excellent choice for families with children, providing on-site entertainment and ways to cool off during warm Texas days.
- Secure and Gated Access: The "gate that closes at night" provides an added layer of security, offering peace of mind to campers regarding their safety and belongings.
- Off-Base Convenience: While associated with Goodfellow AFB, its off-base location means easier access for eligible guests without the need to navigate the main base, making arrival and departure more streamlined.
- Community Vibe: Reviewers mention meeting "nice people here too!" and a "park like setting on the lake where many service families gather," indicating a friendly community atmosphere.
While some facilities (restrooms/laundry) have noted issues, the overall experience, driven by its location, affordability, and excellent staff, makes Goodfellow AFB Recreation Camp a highly recommended spot for eligible campers in Texas.
As a military recreation camp, Goodfellow AFB Recreation Camp typically offers inherent value through its exclusive eligibility and subsidized pricing rather than traditional commercial "promotions." However, here's what to consider regarding special offers or cost-saving opportunities:
- Exclusive Military Pricing: The most significant "promotion" is the inherently low daily rates offered to eligible military personnel, retirees, reserves, National Guard, and DoD civilians. Rates like "$15 night for partial" and "$25/night for full hookups" are highly competitive compared to commercial campgrounds.
- Long-Term Stay Options: While daily rates are provided, many military famcamps offer reduced weekly or monthly rates for extended stays. It's advisable to inquire directly with the camp about these options if you plan a longer visit, as these often present the best value.
- Seasonal Pricing: It's common for campgrounds to have slightly different rates or availability depending on the season (e.g., peak summer vs. off-peak winter). Contacting the camp for current seasonal rates is recommended.
- All-Inclusive Site Features: For the stated daily rates, guests typically receive access to essential hookups (water, electricity, and sewer for full sites), which simplifies budgeting as these are included in the nightly fee.
- Recreational Equipment Rentals: The availability of affordable boat and watercraft rentals on-site (e.g., kayaks for $7/hr & $20/day, pontoon boats from $60/hr) can be considered a value-add, as it eliminates the need to transport or rent from an external provider, enhancing the overall recreational experience at a reasonable cost.
To confirm the most current pricing, inquire about any specific long-term discounts, or understand eligibility requirements, contacting Goodfellow AFB Recreation Camp directly is the best course of action.

It's always best to verify your eligibility and make reservations directly with the camp office to ensure a smooth arrival and comfortable stay.

This cost-effectiveness is a major draw for families and individuals seeking an economical way to experience the great outdoors in their home state. Customer Reviews
Nice pretty park located off base at the Goodfellow recreation area located on Lake Nasworthy. 20 full hookups. 10 partial that are flat but not paved. Staff is super nice. Only issue are the rest rooms and laundry. They smell really bad. Just 2 washers & 2 dryers. I’d stay here again especially because of cost (only $15 night for partial) but they really need to fix the restroom issue. Drive across the bridge for fuel and amenities just a few minutes away. BX & commissary 10 miles away. Remember this is located off base. Cabins, pool & playground are located here also. Was very quiet at night. Met some nice people here too!
Camping at Goodfellow AFB Recreation Famcamp, Texas for two nights. A nice park that is located off base. There are two small parks, one with shade, one with no shade. It is located on a lake, has laundry room and a swimming pool. There is a gate that closes at night. Full hookup with 30/50 amp, great water pressure. Today only 50% of sites are taken. You can make reservations. $25/night
We stayed in a pull thru site with full hook ups. The park is very clean, very quiet and we felt very safe. The fishing was good. We caught quite a few bass using chicken liver.
We love it here! It is our go to summer spot! It’s got the nicest people and we boat, rent cabins or RVs and have the best time.
First & foremost forget about getting a full hookup. These appear to reserved for only friends of the “the guy in charge” that are homesteaders. All the full hookups look as if the the campers have lived there a number of months. The one that was coming open on the day we arrived was occupied at 12:30 when we got there. Keep in mind these are supposed to be 1st come 1st service. After 2:00pm this camper left and another friend of the “the guy” moved in. And no they had not been waiting. Now there is a printed paper in the office denoting no stay more than 90 days. That doesn’t seem to adhered to. When checking in the young lady placed us in an occupied site in the temp area. We had to find an open site ourselves. No sewer. When asked some very basic questions, she couldn’t answer any of them. “The guy” came in to act as if we were squatters in his personal kingdom. Upkeep is also a problem. Grass in the entire park needs to be cut. Looking somewhat mouse infected. Bugs are bad. There was a giant ant mound at our site. In the “temporary” area we were in, it is very loud. Major road next door with a 24 hr convenience store within a stone’s throw. For some reason the bath house is located beside the full hookup sites. So the people without sewer have to walk the furthest. The people with sewer and no need of the bath house are right beside it. No parking signs near the bath house. No hooks or towel rods in the bathhouse. The laundry mat has ONE operating washer & two dryers. The room & machines are very dirty. We won’t be back. Numerous private campgrounds nearby that offer much better accommodations and they want you to be there. No “special people” that don’t have to follow the rules.
