Services Offered:
- Walk-in Campsites: Koomer Ridge offers campsites that are mostly walk-in availability. This means campers park their vehicles and then carry their gear a short distance to their designated site, providing a more secluded feel.
- Designated Campsites: Sites are generally flat with small gravel, offering a stable and clear area for setting up tents or small camping setups.
- Outhouses/Vault Toilets: The campground provides "outhouses" (or vault toilets) for restroom facilities. Reviews indicate they are "pretty average" and "spread out well" for convenience.
- Potable Water (limited availability): While some water is available, recent reviews suggest that the main water supply can be inconsistent due to maintenance issues (e.g., "water main burst so only water was by his camper"). It is advisable for campers to bring their own water or confirm availability directly.
- Dumpsters: Waste disposal is typically provided through dumpsters, encouraging campers to keep the area clean.
- Ranger Station/Information: A park ranger is present, indicating a source of information and assistance regarding campground rules, trail conditions, and local area details.
Features / Highlights:
- Beautiful Location: Koomer Ridge is consistently praised for its "Beautiful location," offering stunning natural scenery within the Red River Gorge area of the Daniel Boone National Forest.

- First-Come, First-Served Availability: The "mostly walk-in availability" means spontaneous trips are often possible, without the need for advance reservations for many sites.
Promotions or Special Offers:
As a campground located within a national forest and managed by the U.S. Forest Service (or a concessionaire for them), Koomer Ridge Campground typically operates on a standardized fee structure rather than frequent promotions or special offers. However, for Kentucky locals, there are a few considerations that can make a visit more advantageous:
- Interagency Senior/Access Passes: For eligible individuals, holding an America the Beautiful – National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Senior Pass or Access Pass can provide a 50% discount on the campsite fee. This is a significant benefit for seniors and those with permanent disabilities.
- Affordable Base Rates: Compared to many private campgrounds with extensive amenities, primitive or more basic campgrounds within national forests often have more affordable base rates, making them a budget-friendly option for getting into nature.
- Off-Peak Season Value: While there might not be official "discounts," visiting during less popular times of the year (e.g., weekdays outside of summer peak, or earlier/later in the season) can offer more site availability and an even quieter experience for the same standard fee.
It’s important to note that information on current bathhouse status (as noted in reviews) or any unexpected water issues is best confirmed directly with the campground or the Daniel Boone National Forest Red River Gorge Ranger District before your visit. Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
For Kentuckians, Koomer Ridge Campground offers an exceptionally suitable and appealing option for an outdoor escape, deeply rooted in the unique natural character of our state. Its suitability for locals stems from several key factors that resonate with those who appreciate genuine wilderness experiences.
Firstly, its prime location within the iconic Red River Gorge Geological Area, part of the Daniel Boone National Forest, is a significant advantage. This means Kentuckians have direct access to some of the most breathtaking hiking trails, unique geological formations, and untouched natural beauty our state has to offer, all without the need for extensive travel across state lines. For avid hikers, climbers, or simply those seeking solitude in nature, Koomer Ridge serves as an ideal basecamp, putting you right in the heart of the action.
Secondly, the campground's elevated position on a ridge provides a crucial benefit: peace of mind regarding flooding. As some local campers may be aware of flooding concerns in certain parts of the region, the "up on the ridge" location offers a sense of security that allows for a more relaxed and worry-free camping experience, regardless of weather conditions. This makes it a reliable choice for planning trips throughout the camping season.
Furthermore, the emphasis on a "quiet" environment and "plenty of space and privacy between sites" caters directly to those who seek a genuine escape from noise and crowds. This is not a bustling resort-style campground but rather a haven for introspection, nature observation, and peaceful relaxation. For Kentuckians looking to truly disconnect and immerse themselves in the sounds and sights of the forest, Koomer Ridge delivers. The walk-in nature of many sites further enhances this sense of seclusion and connection to the natural world.
In essence, Koomer Ridge Campground offers Kentucky locals an authentic, accessible, and reliably serene wilderness camping experience. It's a place where the focus is on natural beauty, quiet contemplation, and direct access to some of the state's most cherished outdoor resources. For those who prioritize raw natural beauty and a peaceful setting for their camping adventures, Koomer Ridge is an ideal and suitable choice within our beautiful state.
Customer Reviews
Love Koomer Ridge. Stayed here every time I visit RRG. Campsites are mostly walk-in availability, and I've never had a problem finding one. Nice and flat with small gravel, outhouses are pretty average and spread out well. Beautiful location and always decently quiet, plenty of space and privacy between sites. Close to all sorts of trails, and being up on the ridge I'm not worried about flooding like I would be at some of the other local campgrounds.
Reserved spot 4/18-20-25 thinking bathhouses would be open. They are not. Park ranger said probably not until May, laying tile. Also water main burst so only water was by his camper. No mention on website. We love Koomer campground but have been let down last few times
I regret staying at this campground. Their shower and bath house was closed and there wasn’t any potable water available either but the price to stay there was still $31. I would’ve done back country camping if I had known that. Tent pads were all crushed gravel. My opinion it is not worth $30 a night. They should’ve given discount with all the amenities that were unavailable. One note is that the vault toilet were not disgusting like they usually are.
Staff horrible,, no showers were working, wash rooms disgusting not cĺean.. water for washing only not drinking....garbage was overflowing out of cans. .. Sites amazing lots of space for tents or small rv...no hook ups
Good camping area. Access to trails. This was early season and water hydrants were not on toilets are the primitive out house type.
