Introduction / Overview
For New York State residents craving a quick, accessible escape into genuine wilderness, the Port Jervis Elks Brox Campground stands out as a unique and highly-rated local option. Located high above the historic city of Port Jervis in Orange County, this site is often described by local visitors as a "hidden gem," offering a truly remote camping experience that is still within a comfortable drive or train ride of the greater metropolitan area.
The campground is situated within the historic Elks-Brox Memorial Park, a significant piece of local history dedicated to the community by the Port Jervis Elks Lodge No. 645. This unique heritage contributes to the supportive, community-focused atmosphere visitors enjoy. Crucially, the operation is often managed by dedicated local volunteers, such as the town's Outdoors Club, ensuring a friendly and well-cared-for environment that respects the natural beauty of the mountain setting.
Primarily catering to the "Hiker/Biker" demographic, this campground is a fundamental part of the much larger Port Jervis Watershed Park and Recreation Area. It provides a rustic, no-frills base camp designed for outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize trail access, stunning scenic views, and an immediate connection to nature. The elevation provides a distinctive advantage, offering panoramic vistas of the Delaware and Neversink River valleys and the convergence of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania—a view truly unmatched in the region.
Location and Accessibility
The Port Jervis Elks Brox Campground boasts an enviable and highly convenient location for New York locals, blending mountain seclusion with essential urban proximity. The campground address is 201 Skyline Dr, Port Jervis, NY 12771, USA. This places it directly on Skyline Drive, a scenic, winding road that ascends the mountains overlooking the city.
Accessibility is a major highlight, especially for users from downstate New York. Unlike many remote campgrounds, this location is accessible not only by car but also via public transportation, specifically the Metro-North rail service, which terminates in Port Jervis. This unique feature makes it an ideal spot for environmentally conscious travelers or those without immediate vehicle access, providing a rare opportunity for city dwellers to embark on an authentic mountain camping trip.
Port Jervis is located in the beautiful tri-state area (NY, NJ, PA), positioning the campground as a perfect hub for regional exploration. The town itself is right at the base of the mountain and is easily accessible from the campground. This means campers are never far from convenience. The quaint, historic downtown offers a range of services, including grocery stores, gas stations, pharmacies, and a developing boutique section featuring good food, antique shops, and local venues, ensuring that all supply needs are met quickly and easily before heading back up to the peaceful mountain top.

Awesome campgrounds and super nice hosts! High atop the mountain with unbelievable views, this campground is definitely a hidden gem. Super clean port-a-potties were a plus... lots of nice hiking and biking trails. The town below is quaint and really fun to explore with lots of good food and antique shops. We'll definitely be returning! Thanks Wayne and Mike!!
Oct 25, 2021 · Double YouA lovely little hidden gem of a campground under two hours out of NYC (accessible by car or Metro North rail service) and operated by volunteers of the town's Outdoors Club. Up on the mountain surrounding Port Jervis you can get that "away from it all" camping experience (platform site recommended). You will also get plenty of hiking or mountain biking time on the numerous trails with varying levels of difficulty that surround the campsite (definitely bring your hiking boots). There is access to firewood, potable water and porta-potties on site. If you have other needs, the town is right at the base of the mountain with stores, restaurants and services nearby. There is also a developing boutique section of town with more up and coming stores and venues worth checking out. There are also a few small historical sites in town with more coming in the future. Definitely worth a visit!
Sep 22, 2021 · Vivian BurrusThis campsite appears to be CLOSED … I was there in August 2023. There is a chain across the entrance to the campsite and the portapottys are padlocked. There was no one else camping there. The number on google maps is permanently engaged. The web links on the notice board at the campsite entrance are invalid. There was nothing to say you couldn’t camp there, but as there was no one else around and the location is quite isolated, I personally didn’t feel comfortable pitching my tent. If you can’t get through to the number on google maps, I would suggest making alternate plans
Aug 23, 2023 · Robert TalbotNice place for a hike , if you don't like walking you can drive up and take some nice pictures.
