Introduction / Overview
Rumney Rattlesnake Campground, an initiative proudly supported and managed by the American Alpine Club (AAC), is a core part of the New Hampshire climbing experience. Located directly on Buffalo Road in Rumney, it holds a strategic position that is practically unmatched by other local campgrounds. The entire operation is geared toward providing a simple, safe, and social environment for those exploring the world-class sport climbing on Rumney Rocks.
The camping style here is best described as rustic and communal. Guests generally pitch their tents in a large, open grassy field or under the surrounding shaded spots. Unlike campgrounds with designated, private sites, Rumney Rattlesnake encourages a more fluid and collective setup, often leading to natural socializing and the sharing of climbing beta, stories, and gear advice. This communal spirit is a major draw for many local climbers. The campground is open to everyone, but the strong presence of the climbing community defines its unique culture and no-frills, adventure-focused appeal.
The commitment of the AAC to maintaining this space ensures that it remains an accessible resource for the local climbing and outdoor community. For local New Hampshire residents who value location and affordability over extensive luxury amenities, this campground is a perfect fit.

For New Hampshire residents, the Rumney Rattlesnake Campground represents an outstanding resource for accessing one of the state's true outdoor gems. It is particularly suitable for locals for several compelling reasons. Firstly, its affordability, with low per-person nightly rates, makes regular weekend trips feasible and sustainable for students, young professionals, and frequent climbers. Secondly, the unparalleled convenience of its location directly opposite Rumney Rocks eliminates the need for daily parking fees and travel time, allowing local users to maximize their time on the crag or the nearby hiking trails. The "put up your tent wherever you want" flexibility also speaks to the independent spirit often found in the New Hampshire outdoor community.
The campground’s identity as an American Alpine Club property ensures a focus on the climbing ethos, offering a unique and vibrant community hub that you won't find in a typical commercial resort. For a local user, this means a built-in network of like-minded individuals, and the communal amenities—especially the barn—provide a reliable gathering spot regardless of the unpredictable New England weather. Site is right next to the climbing area parking. Plenty of open grass and shaded camping spots to choose from. All have picnic tables too. The barn is perfect for bad weather as you can sit and visit in comfort from the elements. Can't beat the price too! ($12)

Aug 10, 2025 · Stephanie MarkerBunk beds house has everything you need and at a very affordable price. It has a full kitchen, cookware, fridge, dining area, big living room/common area, full bath and beds with beddings and pillows. Plus, walking distance to Rumney climbing area. Camp manager Chris is super friendly and has tons of knowledge of climbing.
May 23, 2023 · Joan ZhaoVery affordable campground, staff are friendly and let you leave your car there during the day while enjoying the excellent climbing (access is right across the road). Farm fresh eggs for 25c are available to buy, there are plenty of shaded camping areas and no designated spots. While there are no showers, there is a nice river with access from the campground and there are basin sinks for washing cookware. Definitely will be coming back.
