Location and Accessibility

The St. Croix Campground is ideally situated at Grantsburg, WI 54840, USA, deep within the vast expanse of Governor Knowles State Forest. This prime location places it directly in the heart of Wisconsin's picturesque Northwoods, offering a true escape into nature while remaining reasonably accessible for many residents across the state. Grantsburg is located in Burnett County, near the western border of Wisconsin, providing convenient access for those coming from the Twin Cities metropolitan area in Minnesota, as well as various parts of Wisconsin.

While the specific driving directions will depend on your starting point, accessing the campground is generally straightforward via state highways leading into Grantsburg. The mention of "road noise from Hwy 70" in a customer review indicates its proximity to a main route, which is a double-edged sword: it offers ease of access but can introduce some ambient noise, especially for sites closer to the highway. However, many campers find that the overall tranquility and large, private sites often outweigh this minor inconvenience.

Accessibility within the campground itself is a notable feature. Customer reviews highlight that each campsite comes with a "handicapped accessible picnic table." This commitment to accessibility ensures that a wider range of visitors, including those with mobility challenges, can comfortably enjoy the picnic facilities at their site. The trails within Governor Knowles State Forest are described as "fantastic paths of dirt or grass" and "even include bridges over the many creeks to cross so your feet won’t get soggy." While the trails are natural, the presence of bridges and well-maintained surfaces suggests an effort to make them as navigable as possible for various users. For detailed trail maps and specific accessibility information, visitors are encouraged to consult the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WI DNR) and the National Park Service websites, which manage the broader forest and riverway areas.

The campground's location alongside the St. Croix Riverway, a major riverway, also implies water access, though the primary focus of the campground itself is on land-based camping and trail exploration. However, the presence of trails leading down to rivers suggests opportunities for riverside enjoyment, potentially including fishing or simply enjoying the water views.

Services Offered

  • Spacious Campsites: The campground offers sites that are described as "fairly private and large," providing ample space for campers to set up their tents or park their RVs without feeling overcrowded.

  • Fire Rings: Every site includes a fire ring, perfect for enjoying campfires, cooking meals, and marshmallow roasting under the Wisconsin stars. Some sites even feature a permanent wooden bench next to the fire ring for added comfort.
  • Rustic Restroom Facilities: The campground provides bathroom facilities, which are noted to be "clean" and "smell ok" as long as users follow instructions (like closing the latrine lid). These are typically vault or pit toilets, offering a more rustic camping experience.
  • Access to Extensive Trail System: A key service is the direct access to numerous walking trails within Governor Knowles State Forest. These trails are well-maintained, with dirt or grass paths and bridges over creeks, suitable for hiking and exploring the forest.
  • River Access (Indirect via Trails): While not a direct watercraft launch from every site, many trails lead down to rivers, offering opportunities for riverside enjoyment, potentially fishing, or simply appreciating the water.
  • Drinking Water: While not explicitly mentioned in the provided reviews, state forest campgrounds typically provide access to potable water pumps for visitor use.
  • Pet-Friendly Environment: Based on the general nature of state forest campgrounds and the mention of interactions with a friendly local cat, the campground is likely pet-friendly, allowing leashed dogs at campsites, adhering to state forest regulations.

As St. Croix Campground is part of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WI DNR) state forest system, its "promotions" typically come in the form of standard state park and forest passes and programs rather than commercial discounts. These programs are designed to make outdoor recreation more accessible and affordable for Wisconsin residents.

    • Reservations: While not a "promotion," making reservations in advance, especially during peak seasons (summer and fall), ensures you secure a site. Reservations can often be made through the WI DNR reservation system online, which sometimes charges a small reservation fee.
    • Non-Reservable Sites: Some sites might be available on a first-come, first-served basis, potentially saving a reservation fee, but availability is not guaranteed.
  • Go Wild Wisconsin Licenses:
    • For activities like fishing in the St. Croix River, relevant fishing licenses are required. These are purchased annually through the WI DNR's Go Wild system. While not a direct "promotion" for the campground, having the necessary licenses allows you to fully utilize the recreational opportunities near the campground.
  • Kids in Parks "Track Trails": While not a direct promotion for the campground's fees, Governor Knowles State Forest might participate in programs like "Kids in Parks," which often offer free self-guided adventures and incentives for families to explore trails. Check the WI DNR website for specific program availability.

It is crucial to note that specific camping fees per night for St. Croix Campground are set by the WI DNR and can vary based on site type (e.g., electric vs. non-electric, if available) and season. First time camping here. The only thing I didn't like was the road noise from Hwy 70. Other than that, the sites are fairly private and large. Very pretty in the fall and lots of trails to walk on. Many of the trails lead down to rivers which is nice. I would camp here again.

I highly recommend St. Croix Family Campground at Governor Knowles State Forest. There’s much to explore nearby on account of it’s a forest alongside a major riverway. The trails are fantastic paths of dirt or grass and even include bridges over the many creeks to cross so your feet won’t get soggy thus preventing you from giving this wild forest a one-star review. Before you go, find trail maps on the WI DNR and the National Park Service websites. The campsites are clear and the ground was soft enough to easily stake a tent. Each site has a handicapped accessible picnic table and a fire ring. Some sites even have a permanent wooden bench next to the fire ring. The bathroom facilities are clean. They even smell ok so long as you read and follow through with the instructions stenciled on the inside of the lid on the latrine- “PLEASE CLOSE”. There’s a resident feral cat that will elude you all weekend until Sunday morning when you’ll see the short-haired orange tabby sunning in the roadway, being friendly with the camperhood kids. The girls will tell you “hew name is Stevie even though she’s a stway, we named hew Stevie.” Then Stevie will stand up and you’ll see she has a pretty sizely pair of unmistakable balls. Stevie will rub against your legs and even allow you a pet or two, finally, as you close out your rustic weekend getaway at this fine, remarkable campground within this amazing Northwoods forest in the state of Wisconsin.

Overall we loved this campground. The layout and placement of bathrooms was ideal. The bathrooms were clean and the hiking trials that extend directly from the cam round are amazing! My only complaint is that the website states there are multiple places that firewood is available for purchase and that was not the case. We found a locked building that was marked “firewood for sale” but there was no way to access the woods. Also, we are new to backing in trailers and the placement of the site numbers makes it difficult to back in. They could be placed more out of the way.

Generally speaking, this is a great campground. Pretty good privacy from neighboring campsites, but about 1/3 have direct exposure to campsites directly across the road/loop. If this is a concern, take this into consideration and consult the campground map before making a reservation. Be aware: there are NO shower facilities on-site - if you don't have an RV/camper, be prepared to go elsewhere for basic hygienic needs. There are basic toilets, however (but no sink or shower). The hiking (interpretive) trails are beautiful and highly recommended. Great views and access to the St. Croix River Valley (and the river itself). Be aware: there are many miles of trails for both hiking and biking in Gov. Knowles State Forest, but most of the trails specifically in the southern St. Croix family campground itself prohibit bikes. Aside from the aforementioned, great experience: beautiful and relaxing - would go again, keeping all of the above in mind
