St Joseph Peninsula Campground About

For Floridians seeking a truly immersive natural experience that combines pristine beaches with diverse ecosystems, St. Joseph Peninsula Campground is an undeniable gem. Located within the highly acclaimed T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, this campground offers a unique opportunity to connect with Florida's unspoiled coastal beauty. Having recently reopened after extensive renovations following Hurricane Michael, the park boasts brand-new facilities, making it a comfortable and modern base for your outdoor adventures. If you're a local resident looking to escape the everyday and dive into a world of abundant wildlife, fishing, and breathtaking scenery, this campground is a must-visit destination.

Visitors consistently praise St. Joseph Peninsula Campground for its "amazing nature" and the quality of its renewed facilities. As one reviewer enthusiastically stated, "The park was closed for over five years after Hurricane Michael and has recently reopened. The campground is brand new including the bath houses." This means you can expect clean, modern amenities that enhance your camping experience. While the storm did impact the tree canopy in the camping areas, leading to "not many trees," this open layout provides a unique sense of spaciousness and potentially clearer views of the vast Florida sky, perfect for stargazing.

Despite the lack of dense tree cover in some camping areas, the natural appeal of the park remains undiminished. Reviewers highlight the "easy access to the beach" and the presence of a "nice nature trail that leaves from the campground through the dunes and along the bay." This immediate access to both the Gulf of Mexico and St. Joseph Bay offers unparalleled opportunities for water activities and wildlife observation. From surf fishing on the Gulf side to exploring the tranquil bay by kayak, the possibilities for outdoor recreation are immense.

The park is renowned for its abundant "wildlife," and visitors often spot various species, making every visit a chance for discovery. The mention of "fishing opportunities everywhere" underscores its appeal to anglers. Additionally, the availability of "cabins right on the bay that rent for about $100 a night" provides a fantastic alternative for those who prefer a more structured stay, especially a great deal for a bayfront experience. Visiting in the "off-season for the area" like December, as one reviewer did, is also noted as a prime time for a "very quiet" and highly recommended experience, perfect for Floridians looking to avoid peak crowds.

Location and Accessibility

St. Joseph Peninsula Campground is located at 8899 Cape San Blas Rd, Port St Joe, FL 32456, USA, placing it within the boundaries of T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park. This location is at the northern end of the Cape San Blas peninsula, a stunning natural barrier island that separates the clear waters of St. Joseph Bay from the Gulf of Mexico. For Floridians, reaching the park is a scenic drive along U.S. Highway 98, leading to Port St. Joe, and then transitioning onto the picturesque County Road 30E (Cape San Blas Road) that extends to the park entrance.

The campground's position within the state park is a key advantage. It offers unparalleled access to diverse ecosystems and recreational opportunities. You are literally steps away from both the Gulf of Mexico's white-sand beaches and the calm, shallow waters of St. Joseph Bay. Boardwalks often provide easy access from the camping areas directly over the dunes to the Gulf beach. The park also features a boat ramp at Eagle Harbor, providing public access to St. Joseph Bay for boaters and paddlers, though a separate fee may apply for boat launching.

While the campground itself provides a feeling of being immersed in nature, it's not entirely isolated. The main park road runs through the peninsula, making it easy to navigate within the park. Basic supplies, fishing bait, and local eateries are available a short drive south on Cape San Blas Road. For more extensive dining, shopping, and services, the charming town of Port St. Joe is also within a reasonable driving distance. This balance of secluded natural beauty and convenient access to necessary amenities makes St. Joseph Peninsula Campground a highly desirable and accessible destination for Florida residents.

Amazing nature abounds. The park was closed for over five years after hurricane Michael and has recently reopened. The campground is brand new including the bath houses. I’m not sure what it looks like before the storm, but there are not many trees in the camping area. There’s a nice nature trail that leaves from the campground through the dunes and along the bay. there’s fishing opportunities everywhere. They also have cabins right on the bay that rent for about $100 a night, which is a good deal. We visited in December, which is the off-season for the area and it was very quiet. Highly recommend this campground.

Winter camping along the Gulf. Happen to find this gem, freshly rebuilt after a hurricane while I was looking for a spot to stay and avoid the polar air coming down. The upkeep in this campground is the best I have ever seen in my travels.

By far the most well maintained state park we have ever camped at. The bathrooms were kept in pristine condition and so were the campsites. Very kind staff. We are excited to return.
