Connecticut residents often seek out the state’s hidden gems for an authentic outdoor escape, and the West Thompson Lake Campground stands as a prime example. Nestled in the serene and picturesque 'Quiet Corner' of Northeastern Connecticut, this U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) managed federal park offers a peaceful, well-maintained haven for campers, paddlers, anglers, and nature lovers. It is a destination that delivers on the promise of a classic New England camping experience: wooded privacy, clean facilities, and direct access to a beautiful 200-acre lake.
West Thompson Lake Campground is renowned among local campers for its relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere. Visitors consistently praise the dedication of the staff—often mentioning individuals like Russ, who work at the front registration shack—for their kindness and welcoming nature, creating a positive start to any Connecticut staycation. Unlike some private campgrounds, the focus here is squarely on preserving the natural setting and providing accessible recreation opportunities. The sites are known to be spacious and tucked into the woods, offering enough natural separation to enjoy a quiet, private time outdoors, even when close to shared amenities like the comfort station.
As a USACE facility, the campground provides a solid balance of essential infrastructure and natural ruggedness. It caters to a range of camping styles, accommodating large Recreational Vehicles (RVs), travel trailers, and traditional tent setups. With a limited number of just 24 sites, the campground maintains an intimate feel, ensuring a high level of quiet and minimizing crowding, which is a significant advantage for those looking to truly unplug from the demands of Connecticut city life.
The true allure of West Thompson Lake, however, is its incredible access to water-based and land-based activities, all centered around the multi-use lake and the surrounding flood control project area. From excellent warm-water fishing and peaceful kayaking on the lake to challenging disc golf and extensive hiking trails on shore, the park is an ideal basecamp for a weekend or week-long adventure for any resident looking to explore the natural beauty of the Quinebaug River Valley.

Location and Accessibility
West Thompson Lake Campground is situated at 449 Reardon Rd in the quaint community of North Grosvenor Dale, CT 06255. This location places it firmly within Windham County’s 'Quiet Corner,' an area of Connecticut known for its rolling hills, antique shops, and preserved natural landscapes.
Despite its rustic feel, the campground is easily accessible for Connecticut locals traveling from all corners of the state and neighboring regions. The primary route for most campers involves easy access via Interstate 395 (I-395), a major thoroughfare for Eastern Connecticut. From I-395, campers can take Exit 50 and follow CT Route 200 and then Route 193/Route 12 into the Thompson area before arriving at the lake.
This strategic positioning in Northeastern Connecticut means that while you feel completely secluded among the pines and hardwoods, you are never far from necessities or interesting local excursions. The vibrant town of Putnam, CT, a regional hub known for its diverse dining scene, arts community, and unique shops, is only a short drive away. Additionally, the location is a gateway to other regional attractions, including the nearby Webster Lake, which offers lovely water for swimming—a perfect short day trip since swimming is generally not permitted in the West Thompson Lake reservoir itself. For those seeking quiet roads and scenic routes, the area provides excellent opportunities for bicycling and scenic drives, ensuring that the journey to and from the campground is as enjoyable as the stay itself.

I very much enjoyed my stay here! I have lot 15 and it was located perfectly. Enough privacy to enjoy my time and close enough to the restrooms. There is a playground close by so expect the sound of kids if they’re at camp. I loved my time there. Hiking to the lake shore was a breeze and really quite beautiful. I would definitely recommend this campground! Everyone was so kind from Russ at the front shack to every camper I ran into.
May 29, 2025 · Amanda CalabreseNice and relaxed atmosphere. Good bathroom and shower. No store, most tent site are level. Couple tight turns into RV spots but overall SOLID place. Nice walk around Thompson lake, however Webster lake is a short drive with lovely water to swim and fish.
Aug 19, 2025 · Colin NeeOverall has not been a good experience and won’t be coming again, our tenting campsite was covered in gravel so we decided to put 2 tents in the grass 5 feet off the gravel. We almost instantly got told we need to remove our tents and put them back onto the dedicated camping area, again on rocks and gravel. The lake is not worth fishing in and you’re forbidden to swim in it. Also only catch and release. Ontop of that the lake was taken over by a group of people with rc boats and we were told by them to only stay near shore and not to go into the middle or the lake. If you want to come here for fishing don’t, if you want to swim don’t come here. Quiet time at 9
