Altenbrauch Farm About
Are you an Ohioan yearning for an authentic, back-to-basics camping experience, far from the crowds and the typical campground hustle? If the idea of truly "roughing it" appeals to your adventurous spirit, then Altenbrauch Farm in McArthur, Ohio, might just be your next favorite outdoor destination. This unique, family-run campground offers a refreshing departure from heavily developed sites, providing vast stretches of private land where peace and quiet reign supreme.
Ohio boasts an incredible array of natural beauty, from the rugged trails of the Hocking Hills region to its serene farmlands. Altenbrauch Farm embodies a different facet of this outdoor charm, focusing on simplicity, privacy, and genuine immersion in nature. It's the kind of place where you can truly disconnect, build a campfire under the stars, and explore without feeling hemmed in. As one satisfied camper noted, it's a place where you "MUST BE PREPARED TO ROUGH IT! LOVED IT." This emphasis on a more primitive experience is precisely what makes Altenbrauch Farm so appealing to those seeking an unadulterated outdoor escape.
This article will provide a detailed look into Altenbrauch Farm, highlighting its distinctive approach to camping, its location and accessibility for Ohio residents, the services it offers, and why it’s perfectly suited for locals eager for a quiet and private outdoor adventure.
Altenbrauch Farm is ideally situated at 27920 Bray Hollow Rd, McArthur, OH 45651, USA. This location places it within Vinton County, a region often referred to as the "Gateway to Ohio's Little Smokies" and part of the larger Appalachian foothills. While it offers a sense of seclusion, it remains reasonably accessible for Ohio residents.
McArthur, the closest town, is roughly an hour's drive southeast of Columbus, and a similar distance from Athens. For those in southern Ohio, it’s a relatively quick trip. The drive to Altenbrauch Farm typically involves navigating well-maintained state routes before transitioning to more rural, local roads. While it's advisable to check road conditions, especially if arriving after heavy rain, the access is generally straightforward. The charm of Altenbrauch Farm lies in its ability to feel wonderfully remote without being entirely cut off from civilization, making it a manageable drive for most Ohioans seeking a quiet retreat. Its proximity to the vast Zaleski State Forest and Wayne National Forest also means plenty of regional outdoor opportunities are within reach, further enhancing its appeal as a base for exploration.
Altenbrauch Farm embraces the concept of primitive camping, meaning its services are focused on facilitating a back-to-basics experience while ensuring essential needs are met. This approach is precisely what draws campers who prefer simplicity over extensive amenities.
- Vast Open Land for Camping: The core offering is expansive, private land where campers can set up their tents. As one reviewer mentioned, "Caleb has lots of room," indicating ample space for campers to spread out and enjoy solitude.
- Primitive/Roughing It Experience: This campground is designed for those who enjoy minimal amenities. Campers should be prepared to bring their own water, cooking supplies, and self-sufficient gear, embracing a traditional camping style.
- Clean Porta Potty: A standout feature, as highlighted by a customer review, is the exceptionally clean porta potty. This attention to a basic but crucial amenity significantly enhances comfort for primitive campers.
- On-site "Camp Store" for Necessities: A truly unique and invaluable service for a primitive site is the availability of a "camp store" run by the farm family. This means if campers "ran out of necessity items, they had them," providing a convenient safety net for forgotten items or unexpected needs. This sets Altenbrauch Farm apart from many other truly primitive sites.
- Privacy: The design and layout of the camping areas prioritize privacy. With "only 1 other group staying" and "lots of room," campers can expect a peaceful and undisturbed experience.
- Dog Friendly: A major highlight for many Ohio families, Altenbrauch Farm explicitly welcomes dogs, allowing you to bring your furry companions to enjoy the wide-open spaces. This is a significant advantage for pet owners seeking camping options.
- Quiet Environment: Reviewers consistently emphasize the "Very quiet" nature of the campground, making it perfect for those seeking a tranquil escape from noise and light pollution.
Altenbrauch Farm’s appeal extends beyond its basic services, offering unique features that make it a compelling choice for Ohioans seeking a particular kind of outdoor adventure.
- Genuine Seclusion and Privacy: In a world where many campgrounds feel packed, Altenbrauch Farm offers a rare commodity: genuine privacy. The ample space ensures that campers can enjoy their own quiet corner of nature without being on top of their neighbors. This is ideal for those looking to truly unwind and disconnect.
- Rustic, Unspoiled Natural Setting: The farm provides an authentic rural Ohio experience. It's not a manicured park but a working farm that offers a natural, untamed environment for camping, perfect for those who appreciate raw beauty.
- Family-Run Hospitality: The "Farm family offering their land" suggests a personal touch and friendly hospitality that can often be missing from larger, corporate campgrounds. The presence of the "camp store" run by them further reinforces this community feel.
- Abundant Roaming Space: Campers will find "lots of places to roam," encouraging exploration of the property, discovery of hidden spots, and a sense of freedom that is difficult to find elsewhere. This makes it excellent for families with active children or those who simply enjoy walking and exploring.
- Star Gazing Opportunities: With minimal light pollution, the quiet, open spaces at Altenbrauch Farm likely offer fantastic opportunities for stargazing, a truly magical experience away from city lights.
- Perfect for Disconnecting: The emphasis on "roughing it" and the peaceful environment makes Altenbrauch Farm an ideal place to truly disconnect from digital distractions and reconnect with nature and loved ones.
- Base for Hocking Hills Region Exploration: While offering its own unique charm, Altenbrauch Farm is also a great alternative or complement to visiting the popular Hocking Hills region. Its proximity allows for day trips to famous natural attractions while providing a more private and rustic camping base.
Given that Altenbrauch Farm appears to be a private, family-run operation focused on a more rustic experience, it's unlikely to offer the kind of standardized promotions found at larger state parks or commercial campgrounds.
However, it is always advisable to directly contact Altenbrauch Farm to inquire about any specific rates for longer stays, off-season discounts, or potential group rates if you're planning a larger gathering. As a small business, they might be open to discussing options that suit your specific needs. They might also have repeat customer incentives or special offers during less busy periods, though this information is best obtained by direct inquiry. The best "promotion" for this type of establishment is often word-of-mouth and the unique, private experience they provide at a potentially more affordable rate than highly developed campgrounds.
To learn more about Altenbrauch Farm, check availability, or make a reservation, the most direct approach is to contact them by phone.

Customer Reviews
We stayed a couple days before memorial day and loved it. Caleb has lots of room but we were lucky that only 1 other group was staying. This place was very clean (cleanest porta potty i've seen camping) and private.
Just a Farm family offering their land (alot of it) but the best part was, if we ran out of necessity items, they had them at the "camp store". Very quiet and lots of places to roam. We will be back. You must be prepared to ROUGH IT! LOVED IT. DOGS WELCOME!!
One of the best camping experiences I’ve ever had. The owner is super kind and the property is beautiful. 10/10 would recommend and will definitely be back!
Very friendly and sweet host. She was able to accommodate us even on a very busy Labor Day weekend. We ended up getting a real good spot and beautiful view of the sky. They have clean portable toilet and wood fire to rent.
Caleb is very welcoming and made sure if we had any questions (before and during our stay) to answer them. You will stop at his home to get a map of the property and a welcome magazine along with some of his personal favorite spots! You also may get lucky enough to get welcomed by a very sweet old pup :) The sites are well shaded in the later hours, there's a clean porta-potty and it is marked on the map. There is firewood, lighters, fire starters and more available to purchase. Plenty of kindling to find lying around! Plenty of distance between sites so you have your privacy. I would recommend doing what I did and downloading offline maps of the area prior to your stay, that way your GPS can get you to and out of there to your destinations afterwards. He also gives directions in his email to you before your stay, as long as you read it you will make it there! I would definitely stay there again.
