Introduction / Overview: Discovering the Tranquil Retreat of Thompson's Lake Campground
For New Yorkers seeking an authentic and accessible outdoor experience in the state’s Capital Region, the Thompson's Lake Campground at John Boyd Thacher State Park stands out as a beloved destination. Nestled just a short drive southwest of Albany, this New York State Park gem offers a peaceful, wooded escape from the pace of city and suburban life. The campground is situated along the dramatic backdrop of the Helderberg Escarpment, providing a unique ecological and geological setting that few other parks can match.
The facility features approximately 140 wooded campsites, catering to both tent campers and RVs (though with the important note of being a "dry camping" facility with no electric or water hookups at the sites themselves). It is a highly-rated family-friendly destination, praised by guests for its clean facilities, spacious, private sites, and the overall sense of safety and relaxation. One visitor noted, "The campground is clean and the sites are large and private," while also highlighting that "Rules are enforced and I felt safe and relaxed." This commitment to a well-managed and respectful atmosphere is a significant draw for local families across New York.
Thompson's Lake itself is the centerpiece of the area—a beautiful natural body of water offering swimming, fishing, and boating. Campers are encouraged to disconnect and embrace the natural beauty, whether by watching the waves roll in or catching a glimpse of a bald eagle soaring overhead. The proximity to local, fresh produce, such as that sold by nearby Amish families, adds a unique and charming rural flavor to a stay, making it more than just a camping trip but an integrated upstate New York experience.
Location and Accessibility: Your Gateway to the Helderberg Hills
Thompson's Lake Campground is perfectly positioned for residents of the Capital District, offering a close-to-home wilderness experience. The physical address is 68 Thompsons Lake Rd, East Berne, NY 12059, USA. This location places it approximately 18 miles southwest of Albany, making it an easy drive for weekend getaways from the greater Albany, Schenectady, and Troy metropolitan areas.
The campground is an integral part of the larger Thacher State Park system, which is renowned for safeguarding six miles of the stunning Helderberg Escarpment, offering magnificent panoramic views of the Hudson-Mohawk Valley, the Adirondack Mountains, and even the distant Green Mountains of Vermont. While tucked away in the serene hilltowns of Albany County, the park is highly accessible. Guests should be prepared for a peaceful, secluded setting, which means local amenities are a short drive away; for example, the closest grocery store may be about 25 minutes out, with gas and a Dollar General closer at approximately 10 minutes. This balance of quiet nature and regional proximity makes it exceptionally suitable for New Yorkers looking to unplug without enduring a long journey.

We rented an RV from Alpine Haus in Amsterdam NY and drove to the campground. We brought our 2 granddaughters and we all had a vacation to remember. Everyone that works there is friendly and helpful. The campground is clean and the sites are large and private. Rules are enforced and I felt safe and relaxed. The lake is beautiful whether you want to swim, fish, or just watch the waves roll in and the bald eagle soaring above.
Jul 30, 2025 · Marilyn SanfordA very quiet park. You can see many fish playing in the water while walking by the lake. On the way to the camp, we met an Amish family selling fruits, vegetables and eggs. They were cheap and fresh. If you happen to be on the way, you should go and take a look
Sep 02, 2025 · Amelie LiNice camp ground on Lake Thompson. Smaller sized sites with no electricity. Some of the sites have direct access to the lake to dump in you kayak. There is a boat ramp on the end of the lake. Saw a bald eagle in the trees at the other end of the lake.
Sep 10, 2025 · Thomas HamiltonA great place to take the family to camp with a beach that has the most attentive, fit, patient lifeguards in the business. You can fish, rent kayaks and SUPs. Buy wood, ice, and hot clean showers. All you need for a relaxing getaway 20 minutes outside of Albany in the Helderbergs. Make reservations far in advance if you like a specific spot.
Aug 03, 2025 · Daniel JonesGood little beach to take a dip in. When we pulled up to the little box office before we get into the park the girl that was working it just stared at us until we said hi, stared at us again and then i told her we’re going to the beach. She said $7 then just stared at me still sitting down and i had to get out of my car to give her my payment. Not a crazy big deal but I’ve never been to a park where I’m the one getting out of my car when I just roll through after paying. Also the lifeguards close early and i could tell they were itching to leave, telling people false times when they showed up an hour before close. I heard them say multiple different closing times to different people. 8/6/25
